Michael Vick Injury: Why Eagles Are Moronic to Risk QB's Health Early in Season

Ryan PhillipsSep 22, 2011

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick seems intent on playing in the team's Week 3 matchup with the New York Giants, despite suffering a concussing Sunday night against the Atlanta Falcons. While Vick has been medically cleared to play, the Eagles would be stupid to risk their star signal-caller this early in the season.

The Eagles are expected to be in the hunt for a Super Bowl title this season, and Vick is a huge part of those plans. By allowing him to play a week after suffering a concussion, they are risking the possibility of a recurrence, which could prove disastrous to the team's season.

Being medically cleared to play doesn't mean that Vick is 100 percent healthy; it just means that he can physically play.

Against the Giants this weekend, the Eagles could start backup Mike Kafka and probably win anyway. Putting Vick in harm's way against a New York team that can rush the passer is a moronic idea, and head coach Andy Reid shouldn't allow it to happen.

I respect Vick's determination to play on Sunday; he thinks this is his team and it needs him to win. I get it. I do. But he needs to consider his long-term health and how a long absence could destroy Philadelphia's season.

With LeSean McCoy tearing it up on the ground, and receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin playing very well, Kafka could probably step in and lead the Eagles to a win. That would give Vick another week to clear his head and get back to full health.

Allowing Vick to play against the Giants on Sunday is simply a bad move. More bad than good can come from that decision, and the Eagles need to step in and make the right one.
