Week 3 Fantasy Football: 5 Stars You Should Sit This Week
After two weeks of the NFL season, fantasy football players have had enough time to evaluate their rosters.
Questions about how certain players would respond to the lockout or a new team have been answered. Under the radar players who have played well have been snapped up.
Fantasy football players are not going to find many free agents who will have a huge impact still available on the waiver wire. Now, it is all about who you have on your roster and who you are willing to sit.
This is the time when the best fantasy football players are able to look past a player's status as an NFL star. Elite status in the NFL does not equate to a huge fantasy output on a weekly basis. Here are five of the best in the NFL who will not be providing huge fantasy value this week.
Ben Roethlisberger
1 of 5Ben Roethlisberger is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. His two Super Bowl victories all but assure him a place in the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.
His role in the Steelers offense, however, does not make him an elite fantasy quarterback. Roethlisberger has been banged up all season thanks to the Steelers terrible offensive line. He is likely to miss practice time this week which could affect his play come Sunday.
Another reason to sit Big Ben on Sunday is the fact that the Steelers are taking on the Colts. The Colts cannot stop the run. Expect Pittsburgh to attack Indy with a steady does of Rashard Mendenhall. Roethlisberger will throw the ball just enough to win.
A better option at quarterback this week would be Kevin Kolb, who faces a punchless Seattle defense, or Josh Freeman, who has been solid and faces a questionable Falcons secondary.
Darren McFadden
2 of 5Darren McFadden is normally a must start. Not against the mighty New York Jets front seven.
The Jets have held their opponents to only 88 yards a game so far this season. Oakland's passing attack is not strong enough to worry Darrelle Revis and the rest of New York's solid secondary. Their main focus will be stopping Run DMC in his tracks.
In McFadden's place, Daniel Thomas of the Dolphins or Dexter McCluster of Kansas City could provide some relief.
DeAngelo Williams
3 of 5After two consecutive 400-yard passing games, it is clear that Cam Newton is not going away.
DeAngelo Williams will continue to see his role in Carolina's offense shrink as Newton racks up the passing yards and Jonathan Stewart steals his carries.
The Panthers defense is not good enough to stop anyone, even the Jacksonville Jaguars. They will continue getting themselves in shootouts. Newton will keep throwing the ball.
This may be the last week for Williams to prove that he deserves a spot as an every week fantasy start.
Hakeem Nicks
4 of 5New York Giants wide receivers are dropping like flies. When Sunday's game against the Eagles rolls around, Hakeem Nicks could very well be the Giants' only healthy wide receiver.
The Eagles all-world secondary will have its eyes on Nicks. Without a viable weapon to take some of the focus off Nicks, the Eagles should have an easy time shutting him down.
The way to beat the Eagles is with the run. NFL coaches realize this. Tom Coughlin will not be butting his head against a wall trying to force feed the ball to Hakeem Nicks.
If you can, try and pick up any Buffalo Bills receiver. The Bills will be throwing the ball all over the field against the Patriots.
Ravens Defense
5 of 5The Ravens defense had an amazing opening week.
That being said, it is unrealistic to expect the Ravens defense to rack up seven turnovers every week.
The Ravens defense is far from the must start they were a few years ago. The Titans exposed their weakness against the pass in Week 2.
This week, the Ravens are matched against Sam Bradford. If Matt Hasselbeck can put up 358 yards on the Ravens secondary, what will Bradford do?
The Arizona Cardinals defense would make an excellent pickup, as they face the pitiful Seahawks offensive attack.
Another defense with a favorable matchup this week is Carolina. The Panthers have struggled this year, but they get Blaine Gabbert in his first NFL start. It is a risky play, but if Gabbert struggles, the Panthers defense will more than hold their own.
