Fantasy Football Week 3 Projections: 5 QBs Who Will Have to Put Up Big Points

Josh TrueloveSep 21, 2011

Every year in fantasy football, a few of us make the mistake of not getting a big-name quarterback early in the draft. We load up on running backs and wide receivers, and we settle on a mid-level quarterback to lead our fantasy teams. Sometimes this leads to fantasy glory, sometimes it leads to fantasy disaster.

So far there are a lot of quarterbacks who are just not putting up the fantasy points that their owners need them to. With that being said, not getting fantasy points does not mean that a certain player is not playing well. A player can have a good game and not get a ton of fantasy points.

There are a lot of quarterbacks who are playing decent, but are not putting up fantasy numbers right now. Here are five quarterbacks who need to start putting up big fantasy numbers to save their fantasy owners from humiliation.

5: Donovan McNabb

1 of 5

Donovan McNabb is not living up to the expectations the Minnesota Vikings or his fantasy owners have given him.

A lot of people gave McNabb a pass for last season. They said "OK, Shanahan did not like him, he had no running game, no receivers outside of Santana Moss, and no offensive line."

Well, now McNabb has an offensive line and the best running back in football. He does not have a lot of help at wide receiver, but he still has not been impressive.

Over the last two games, McNabb has only produced 267 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Anyone who has McNabb on their fantasy team just read this and threw up.

McNabb really has to put up some big numbers this week to save his fantasy owners' seasons.

4: Joe Flacco

2 of 5

Joe Flacco is a good quarterback and is playing well for the Baltimore Ravens, but his fantasy owners need more out of him.

Flacco only has 421 yards so far, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Good enough numbers to win an NFL game for the Baltimore Ravens, not good enough to win for fantasy football.

Flacco has weapons in Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans and Ray Rice. It is time he started using them and giving his fantasy owners some points.

3: Josh Freeman

3 of 5

Josh Freeman is a very good quarterback. He has the "clutch gene" that people love, and he has a big arm. Freeman led a nice comeback against the Minnesota Vikings last week, and the Buccaneers would be lost without him.

But,

Freeman is not helping his fantasy owners. So far, Freeman has thrown for 502 yards. That is good, but he has only thrown for two touchdowns and has two interceptions. Touchdowns bring fantasy points, and Freeman simply does not have enough.

Freeman has to have a big game for his fantasy owners this week.

2: Eli Manning

4 of 5

Eli Manning threw for over 4,000 yards and more than 30 touchdowns last season. So draft him! Right?

Wrong.

The Giants offense seems to be lost. They have obscure play-calling, they lost Steve Smith, and Eli Manning is not producing the big numbers like he did last season. So far, Eli only has two touchdowns to go along with his 468 yards and two interceptions.

Touchdowns bring fantasy points. Eli needs to start throwing more touchdowns for his fantasy owners. He is a good quarterback, but his fantasy numbers are hurting his owners.

1: Matt Schaub

5 of 5

Matt Schaub is a good quarterback. His Houston Texans are 2-0, and they look primed for the postseason already (thanks to the injured Peyton Manning).

Schaub is a perennial fantasy football All-Star. So far this season, he has not been that. He only has three touchdowns to his two interceptions. He has thrown for a decent amount of yardage (450), but touchdowns are more important.

Start throwing it in the end zone to Andre Johnson and help out your fantasy owners, Schaub.
