Michael Vick Injury: Will Eagles' Star QB Play in Week 3?

Ryan RudnanskySep 20, 2011

After getting knocked into his own guy in the Philadelphia Eagles' 35-31 Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, star quarterback Michael Vick suffered a concussion that puts his status for Week 3 in doubt.

Early signs indicated that Vick is insisting he play, as any star athlete would, but the NFL's rule on concussions, combined with the Eagles' hesitance to rush Vick into the lineup, could legitimately see him sit in Week 3.

Per ESPN, Sal Paolantonio reported that "Vick wanted to return to the game on Sunday night, but the team trainers took his helmet and shoulder pads from him."

The Eagles have had to deal with this before with such players as DeSean Jackson, Riley Cooper and Jason Avant. They have been known to take a more conservative approach than perhaps some of their competitors, and specifically in Vick's case, you can bet they will make sure he's 100 percent before he takes the field.

Wrote Paolantonio, via ESPN:

"

"They've got a $100 million investment to protect. And the conservative approach designed by Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder has been successful in bringing back several concussed players over the last two years — DeSean Jackson, Riley Cooper and Jason Avant."

"

Paolantonio reported that Vick wants to practice as soon as Wednesday, but he still needs to take an MRI and get approved by an independent neurologist — a process that generally takes three to five days.

That means it's unlikely that Vick will practice on Wednesday, and the best Eagles fans can hope for is him getting in some late-week practice before playing on Sunday against the New York Giants.

It's worth noting that the Giants' defensive line has been good this season, particularly when defensive end Justin Tuck returned in Week 2. They have six sacks thus far —near the middle of the league — but that number is a bit misleading. They only recorded two sacks against Sam Bradford and the St. Louis Rams in Week 2, but they got numerous hits on Bradford.

If Vick isn't 100 percent by game time, you can expect the Eagles to hold him out. The last thing you need is your wobbly superstar getting knocked around when he's not 100 percent.
