NFL Power Rankings: Where Did ESPN Go Wrong with Week 3 Power Rankings?

Ryan RudnanskySep 20, 2011

ESPN usually does a pretty good job with its NFL power rankings and my qualms are generally small.

But in ESPN's latest power rankings, there are several question marks.

I had so many issues with these power rankings that only a column would suffice.

So, let us break down the issues, starting from the top...

New York Jets (No. 3)

The Jets were basically handed a comeback victory against Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys, quarterback Mark Sanchez has three interceptions through two games, they have virtually no running game and they somehow find themselves at No. 3 after a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. I did tout the Jets before the season and said they were being overlooked, but they have several issues and they certainly aren't No. 3 in the nation.

Houston Texans (No. 5)

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the Texans after their defensive additions in the offseason. I picked them to win the AFC South before Peyton Manning was declared "out." But I do think No. 5 is giving them way too much credit after wins against two highly-flawed teams, including the Colts. I want to see their performance against the Saints before I crown them a top-five team.

Chicago Bears (No. 10)

Most people probably think this is an adequate place to put the Bears after they stomped the Falcons in Week 1. But I don't. The Bears' victory in Week 1 masked the fact that the Bears' offensive line is horrendous and will likely not get much better the rest of the season with what they have. Week 2 showed who the Bears truly are, a team that can't protect its quarterback and will suffer all season for it.

Arizona Cardinals (No. 19)

No NFC West team should be in the top 20, let alone the Cardinals. Their addition of quarterback Kevin Kolb won't mean anything if they can't defend the pass. Rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson will get better, but their secondary as a whole is inexperienced. The Cardinals have given up 343 passing yards per game through the first two weeks.

Indianapolis Colts (No. 30)

OK, I understand that Peyton Manning is out and he's a huge part of their team. But No. 30?! Manning is not an entire team, no matter what anyone says, and there is some solid talent on this team, including at defensive end and receiver. I find it hard to believe the Colts are all of a sudden at the bottom of the barrel.

Kansas City Chiefs (No. 31)

Same thing here. I know the Chiefs just lost star running back Jamaal Charles for the season, but you don't go from a 10-6 team to the second-worst team in the league with one loss on offense. I did pick the Chiefs to have a bit of a dropoff this season, but nothing to this extent, even after losing Charles. If I was Chiefs coach Todd Haley, I'd show the team ESPN's power rankings. That's all the motivation they need to rebound.

Well, there you have it. As you can tell, I basically hated everything about ESPN's power rankings this week.

Of course, your questions and comments are encouraged.

Better luck next time, ESPN!
