Jets vs. Raiders Week 3: 7 Matchups to Watch as Gang Green Invades Black Hole

Raj PrashadJun 5, 2018

The last time the New York Jets played the Oakland Raiders, Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene combined for 265 yards rushing and three touchdowns, and the Jets won 38-0.

The Raiders plan to get off to a hot start with their ground-and-pound offense as Mark Sanchez and the Jets take flight in Oakland.

Ahead are seven matchups to watch for Sunday afternoon.

Jason Campbell vs. Jets Secondary

1 of 8

Jason Campbell has been a complete game manager for the Raiders this season.

Campbell has completed 36-of-55 passes for 428 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The seventh-year pro hasn't had the entirety of the Oakland receiving core healthy yet this year, and won't as he faces a stout Jets defense.

Chaz Shilens and the rookie Denarious Moore are expected to be the starters as the Raiders offense faces off against Gang Green. In his first game, Moore snagged five catches for 146 yards, one touchdown and one rush for 25 yards.

Moore, or Shilens for that matter, won't have much room to work with when they face Antonio Cromartie and Revis Island. The two outstanding corners have helped the Jets pass defense to No. 11 in the league.

Matt Shaughnessy vs. Jets Offensive Tackles

2 of 8

Matt Shaughnessy is just warming up, as the third-year defensive end has five tackles and one sack through two games.

Shaughnessy has been forceful off the right end and will be yet another challenge for right guard Brandon Moore and right tackle Wayne Hunter.

The Jets offensive line ranks in the bottom half of the league, sitting at No. 21. New York has allowed five sacks and 10 hits on quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Shaughnessy's ability, mixed with the Jets struggles on the line should make for a physical day in the trenches.

Richard Seymour vs. Jets Offensive Guards/Center

3 of 8

Richard Seymour has been on a tear coming off the line, starting out the season with six tackles and two sacks through two games.

The 11-year veteran has been exploding into enemy territory and has a great chance to do so against a depleted Jets offensive line. Center Nick Mangold is out with a sprained ankle, so Colin Baxter will start his first game at center since his days at Arizona.

Baxter, with help from his right and left guards, will have his work cut out when he steps on the line against Seymour Sunday.

Darren McFadden vs. Bart Scott/David Harris

4 of 8

Darren McFadden is on pace to rush for his second straight 1,000-yard season.

Over two games, McFadden has rushed for 222 yards on 42 carries combined and is only seven yards behind league-leader Fred Jackson. The fourth-year player out of Arkansas also has racked up 76 yards receiving on eight catches.

McFadden will face his toughest test to date against the Jets duo of inside linebackers, David Harris and Bart Scott. Harris and Scott have been all over the field for the outstanding Jets defense, combining for 23 tackles through two games.

McFadden is averaging five yards per carry heading into the showdown with New York, but once the former Razorback hits the second level, Scott and Harris will be ready and waiting for him.

Mike DeVito vs. Raiders Offensive Line

5 of 8

Another New York Jet who has stepped up as of recent is Mike DeVito.

The fifth-year player out of Maine started 11 games for the Jets last year, registering 34 tackles and forcing two fumbles. In only two games this year, DeVito has two tackles and one sack.

The Oakland offensive line has only allowed one sack, while Jason Campbell has been hit just six times.

Mark Sanchez/Dustin Keller vs. Tyvon Branch/Oakland Safeties

6 of 8

Mark Sanchez might always throw interceptions, but he is firing more consistently this season than in years past.

Sanchez completed 59 and 70 percent of his passes over his first two games, while throwing for 517 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Sanchez's best threat this year is tight end Dustin Keller. The fourth-year tight end has caught 11 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyvone Branch should be the safety covering Keller during their match Sunday. Branch is a fast, physical safety, but is often lost in pass defense, which should open up the middle for Keller.

Jets Trio of Receivers vs. Raiders Secondary

7 of 8

The Raiders secondary is in for a pass-filled Sunday afternoon when they face off against the Jets.

After losing out on prize corner back Nnamdi Asomugha and allowing receiver Braylon Edwards to walk in free agency, New York signed veteran receivers Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason.

Santonio Holmes has registered nine catches for 112 yards and one touchdown. Derrick Mason has made four receptions for 26 yards, while Plaxico Burress has snagged four balls for 72 yards and one touchdown.

Mark Sanchez has been a gunslinger this season with his new weapons, so the revamped Oakland secondary has their work cut out against the new-look Jets.

The Black Hole vs. Fireman Ed

8 of 8

The real question this week is if Fireman Ed will travel all the way out to Oakland?

If he does, this could be a battle for the ages as the man who leads the Jets' most famous chant attempts to be louder than the dreaded Black Hole.

Regardless of which fan base is louder, the game winner will be division leaders Sunday night.
