Michael Vick Injury Update: 5 Things This Means for Philadelphia Eagles Offense

Chris TrapassoSep 19, 2011

Michael Vick wasn't having his typical prime-time, video game-like performance on Sunday night, but the Eagles offense drastically changes with him out of the lineup.

The coaching staff likes Mike Kafka, but it's clear he doesn't bring the same skill set to the table as Vick and the team gets much more one-dimensional without him.

Vick was concussed on Sunday, which usually means he'll be out at least a week.

The Eagles have to adapt to the loss of their dynamic signal-caller and do it fast with a divisional matchup against the New York Giants in Week 3.

Here are the five things this means for Philadelphia moving forward...

Mike Kafka To Take the Reins of the Offense

1 of 5

Many think the Vick injury means Vince Young will be starting next week.

I don't think that'll be the case. He is still nursing a hamstring injury he suffered in the team's preseason finale and I'd be surprised if the Eagles rush him back.

Kafka is unquestionably a step down from Vick, but he can make all the throws from the pocket and Philadelphia can turn to LeSean McCoy and Ronnie Brown in the coming weeks.

The offense, however, will have to be altered, as the threat of the quarterback running isn't really there anymore.

Kafka is athletic and can move, but teams will live with him scrambling.

If Vick is out an extended period of time, I do think Young will see some action, but right now, Kafka is the man in Philly.

Increased Carries for LeSean McCoy and Ronnie Brown

2 of 5

As if this wasn't obvious enough.

LeSean McCoy was incredibly shifty and elusive on Sunday night and now the Eagles must rely on the ground game more than ever.

McCoy isn't a bruising back so expect to see Ronnie Brown shoulder some of load against the Giants next week even though he had only three carries against the Falcons.

Small Decrease in Production from DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin

3 of 5

It would be easy to think DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin will suffer without Vick, and they will.

But I don't think they'll drop off as much as you think.

Kafka has a strong arm and the system in Philadelphia is conducive to successful quarterback play.

The play-action roll-outs won't be there, but they'll continue to stretch the field with their electric wideouts, use a variety of screen plays for McCoy and feature Brent Celek across the middle.

A decrease in production, yes, but not a substantial downturn on offense.

Less Roll-out Draw Plays

4 of 5

The Eagles will unquestionably turn to their running game to get into a rhythm on offense, but they'll be limited in the type of run plays they can call.

With Vick behind center, a delayed roll-out draw play, that looks like No. 7 may run, will be thrown out the window.

It was effective against the Falcons, as it froze the linebackers for a split second, allowing the offensive line to get to the second level and gave LeSean McCoy room to run.

Kafka just isn't that dangerous with his feet.

More Play-Action

5 of 5

The play-action was a integral part of the Eagles offense with Vick and McCoy behind the line of scrimmage, but it'll be even more vital with Kafka calling the shots.

Because they'll run more often, teams will be loading the box to shrink McCoy's running lanes.

After the Eagles run the ball in the first quarter, the play-action pass should be utilized, especially if they still want to find DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin deep.
