NFL Scores Week 2: Which Teams Recorded Most Impressive Wins?

Hunter AnsleySep 18, 2011

After Week 1 saw the Baltimore Ravens dropkick the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Bears dismantle the Atlanta Falcons, there were plenty of pundits calling for a possible Bears-Ravens Super Bowl.

After Week 2, that talk has likely halted.

The Bears were outrun by the New Orleans Saints and the Ravens were doubled up by the Tennessee Titans as a pair of 0-1 teams righted their ships with easier-than-expected wins over conference foes. Of course, Week 2 wasn't all about redemption, as teams like the Detroit Lions and New York Jets dropped exclamation points on season-opening wins.

Still, the most impressive win may have come in a game that wasn't decided until the final play. Here are three of the most impressive victories of Week 2.

Detroit Lions 48, Kansas City Chiefs 3

The score says it better than we ever could, but we'll at least lay out some details here. Matthew Stafford tossed four touchdowns, Jahvid Best went over 50 yards rushing and receiving while scoring twice and Calvin Johnson hauled in multiple touchdown passes for the second straight week.

The Lions limited the Chiefs to 267 yards and caused six turnovers en route to their second win over a team with a winning record last season, and after Chicago's loss, they look like the NFC North's best chance to topple the Green Bay Packers.

Buffalo Bills 38, Oakland Raiders 35

For a team that knocked off a 2010 playoff squad on the road and won by 34 points, the Bills weren't getting a lot of respect heading into today's matchup with Oakland. That looked to be the right opinion early on as the Raiders took the lead and forced Ryan Fitzpatrick into a few ill-advised throws.

However, after battling back to within four with only seconds left on the clock, Fitzpatrick hit David Nelson for a six-yard score on fourth down to give Buffalo a 38-35 lead. The Bills are now 2-0 heading into a huge divisional matchup with New England, and Fitzpatrick has to be feeling more confident after tossing seven touchdowns against only one pick through two wins.

New Orleans Saints 30, Chicago Bears 13

The Saints offense answered a lot of questions in the season-opening loss to Green Bay, but the defense faltered and caused enough concern to fill the void. Then, Marques Colston and Lance Moore caught the injury bug, reopening the speculation surrounding the offense.

That all ended Sunday after the Saints methodically dropped 30 points on the Bears while holding Chicago to 13 points and notching six sacks of Jay Cutler. The team that won today, despite missing some key receivers, looked more like the 2009 World Champions than anything we saw from New Orleans in 2010.

Tennessee Titans 26, Baltimore Ravens 13

The Ravens stomped the Steelers to open the season, which flooded the sports world with talk of a Ravens Super Bowl and proof that Joe Flacco had finally become a truly great NFL passer. Apparently, the Ravens read a few of their own clippings.

Baltimore struggled to 229 total yards of offense against a unit that had folded against Jacksonville only a week ago. Meanwhile, the Titans managed to confuse everyone who's ever watched an NFL game by playing sound defense and winning on the arm of Matt Hasselbeck instead of the legs of Chris Johnson.

New York Jets 32, Jacksonville Jaguars 3

It's no surprise that the Jets beat the Jaguars. Despite Jacksonville's Week 1 win over Tennessee, and New York's own struggles against Dallas, no one really expected the Jags pull this one out. What was surprising, however, was how easily New York dispatched Luke McCown and co.

The Jets have made a living off playing to the level of their competition over the past two seasons, and to see them beat a bad team the way an "elite" team should was impressive, even if only because it was so unexpected. Mark Sanchez did not play particularly well, but with the defense forcing four turnovers, he didn't have to.
