Dez Bryant Injury: Cowboys WR Inactive, Offense Won't Miss a Beat

Evan AdrianSep 18, 2011

Well, Dallas got a piece of bad news for today's showdown with San Francisco: Dez Bryant likely won't be suiting up for the contest, per ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Dez injured his quad returning a punt in last week's heartbreaking loss to the Jets. Apparently, he just didn't heal fast enough.

Maybe now Jerry Jones will get his wish and Dallas will take Dez off of punt returns.

Despite playing without Dez, I don't see Dallas's offense having too much of a struggle vs. San Francisco. Yes, San Francisco's defense looked pretty good last week against Seattle, but no one has ever mistaken Tony Romo for Tarvaris Jackson.

Seattle was also missing its new No. 1 receiver in Sidney Rice. And guess what? Tarvaris still managed to put up 197 yards passing and two scores through the air. Not bad—for Tarvaris.

The 49ers secondary didn't have too many dynamic targets to cover in Week 1.

Things are a little different today.

San Francisco has to worry about Felix Jones catching passes out of the backfield, Jason Witten over the middle and an apparently a healthy Miles Austin all over the field. And don't sleep on Kevin Ogletree, either. This could be his breakout game.

Let's also not forget that Romo will be playing with a chip on his shoulder this week. Starting off 0-2 in the NFC East is a tough pill to swallow. I don't want to say Dallas has no shot at the postseason if they start with two consecutive losses, but it would certainly be a long hill to climb.

Yes, Dez is now Dallas's top target at WR, but their offense is dynamic enough to make up for it. I'm expecting a lot of Jones early and a lot of looks for Witten in the red zone.

Tony, here's your chance to prove the naysayers wrong.

Don't blow it.
