Baylor Big East: Bears Are More Than Ready to Fill Big East's New Holes
The Baylor Bears athletic program has been on a recent upswing, and they are looking to keep that momentum rolling. The problem is, their Big 12 Conference may not be able to support them.
The Big 12 appears to be crumbling around them, and they certainly don't want to be left in the rubble. So, they looked to another conference to set the seeds for a departure plan. According to Pro Football Talk, Baylor has reached out to the Big East to let them know that their bags are packed and they are ready to head over there should the Big 12 disintegrate.
Luckily for Baylor, it appears the Big East will have plenty of room for them. In the above linked article by PFT they discuss the very real possibility of Syracuse and Pitt jumping from the Big East to the ACC.
This would be a huge blow for any conference. While Syracuse and Pitt struggle to achieve relevance on the gridiron, they are perennial college basketball powers. Success at either of those sports is enough to fund an entire athletic program.
Their departure would instantly weaken what is one of the strongest basketball conferences in the nation, and leave the Big East searching for an identity.
The inclusion of Baylor would clearly ease that pain. While they haven't established the consistency of Pitt or Syracuse on the basketball court, this is a very good program. Scott Drew has this basketball program clicking and they are just two years removed from an elite 8 appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
Their football program is not far behind either. They are 1-0 this season and fresh off a victory over then-No. 14 TCU. Robert Griffin III is one of the most exciting playmakers in college football, and this team is on the cusp of cracking the top 25.
Now they just need a conference that will house all of this momentum.
