ACC Expansion: Pittsburgh and Syracuse to ACC Transforms Conference Landscape
We have a Saturday morning shocker, and no it's not a college football upset.
According to Heather Dinich of ESPN, the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University have officially applied to join the ACC. Here is what a high-ranking ACC official told Dinich,
"We have been contacted by at least 10 schools in this fluid landscape. We have received letters of application from Pitt and Syracuse.
"
Syracuse was a founding member of the Big East, and Pittsburgh has been a member for almost 30 years.
This is a shocking development, that could drastically change the landscape of college sports, perhaps even college football.
On the surface, this immediately makes the ACC the premier basketball conference, with four teams that should be in the top 10 each and every season. Sorry Duke and North Carolina, but you guys have company for the ACC title now.
How might it affect college football, you ask?
Just a few weeks ago the University of Texas was looking to recruit Pittsburgh to the Big 12. Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated was just one of many Twitter users who wondered what impact this decision would have on Texas,
"A couple weeks ago, Texas tried to recruit Pitt to the Big 12. Now Pitt, 'Cuse suddenly want ACC? ... Hmm.
"
The ACC does admit they have been contacted by 10 teams in total, it would be very interesting if it is discovered that Texas was one of those teams. The ACC may just be looking to become a factor in college football as well.
