6 of the Blandest Players in the NFL Today

Gordon BlockJun 7, 2018

The excitement of the NFL game comes from more than a group of uniforms moving across a field.

Fans don't cheer laundry. Fans cheer players.

Most players know that their work goes beyond the field and will throw in a little bit of enthusiasm when talking with fans and the media.

Not every player follows this model.

While there's a lot to be said about showing tact and remaining professional, these qualities border a line with another word: bland.

Here are six players who are among the blandest in the league.

Eli Manning

1 of 6

He may have won a Super Bowl, but New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning may have about as much charisma as a futon.

Making matters worse are the inherent comparisons that come with his brother, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. While Peyton gets to host Saturday Night Live and feature in a seemingly endless advertisements, Eli's main ad work has been with Oreos...in an ad with Peyton.

The only edge for the younger Eli compared to Peyton is his injury history, with Peyton going through an unenviable recovery from surgery on his vertebrae.

Meanwhile, Eli's injury history is a lot more interesting, highlighted by this nasty hit that left a three-inch head laceration that had him bleeding him profusely.

Joe Flacco

2 of 6

As demonstrated by the Baltimore Ravens' domination of the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Joe Flacco is very good.

However, Flacco may have the most boring facial hair in professional sports. Some players have beards. Others have goatees. Maybe even a soul patch.

Joe Flacco went with a unibrow.

Even if the brow was then used for a charity fundraiser, I'm not sold. I'm bored.

Nnamdi Asomugha

3 of 6

While Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the best defensive players in the game, he is included on this list because his reputation has given him little to do.

Last season, as a member of the Oakland Raiders, Asomugha saw only 27 passes go his direction all year.

In his Eagles regular season debut Sunday, the St. Louis Rams only threw at him twice.

Nnamdi could pull up a lawn chair for most of the game. As a viewer, I can look away if a play is going his way.

Ryan Succop

4 of 6

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop, the Mr. Irrelevant of 2009, has lived up to his name in a major way.

After a nice rookie year, he underachieved mightily in 2010. His 2011 didn't get off to a great start either. He missed his only kick in the Chiefs' season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills.

It's not a whole lot of fun for the fans to watch missed kicks.

Vonta Leach

5 of 6

The Baltimore Ravens' Vonta Leach, a Pro Bowl fullback in 2010, is among the top fullbacks in the league.

Unfortunately, the prominence of the fullback position has declined dramatically. While it is an important part of the running game, it is the least glamorous position on the field.

Even for someone who excels at his position like Leach does, his position makes it easy for fans to block him out.

Matt Schaub

6 of 6

It's tough to believe that the quarterback of a major contender would go completely unnoticed.

However, Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub has made that a reality.

Schaub may have put up flashy numbers in the team's win over the Indianapolis Colts, but don't let that fool you—his play is boring enough to be ignored.

Even when he does play well, his boring style allows for credit to be taken away. Even if the passing game flourishes, that credit goes to wide receiver Andre Johnson. Otherwise, the talented running game gets the glory.

Matt Schaub may say he's not boring, but it's pretty easy to say otherwise.
