Denver Broncos Fans Calling for Tim Tebow, Fix the Rest of Your Team First

Steven SlivkaSep 15, 2011

After The Denver Broncos 23-20 defeat to their arch-rival Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football, it was clear that they picked up exactly where they left off last year: A mess.

The Broncos couldn't run the ball to save their lives, and they couldn't stop it either. Darren McFadden ran circles around what was supposed to be a much improved Broncos defense for 150 yards on only 22 carries. That's nearly seven yards a carry. And Knowshon Moreno was about as much of a factor to the Broncos rushing attack as Pete Best was to the Beatles.

Despite a penalty-filled first half that could only be present at an old AFC West rivalry game, Kyle Orton led his team down the field right before halftime to get some sort of momentum on the Broncos side. However, an interception by a diving Matt Giordano brought an end to any aspirations of Broncos momentum, and the crowd at Mile High Stadium began chanting "Tebow!" as the Broncos sulked into the locker room.

For all you fans in Denver: Tim Tebow is not the answer to your problems.

Sure, he brings hope to the team because of his youth and his ability to win in college. But the NFL is a completely different game. During Tebow's three games in which he started last season, (where the Broncos were beyond desperate) he completed only 50 percent of his passes. Meanwhile, Orton threw for nearly 3,700 yards to go with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

And he didn't even play the entire season.

In 2009, Orton played every game for the Broncos, and has showed that he's vocal in the huddle and patient with his targets.

Hence, Brandon Lloyd of 2010.

But Denver has far more problems to worry about than who's going to be throwing the ball. Whoever is behind center in Denver will have their hands tied with an offensive line that can't block a D-II school. Orton was sacked five times by the Raiders defense, twice by Richard Seymour alone.

Despite the putrid offensive line, Orton didn't have too terrible of a game. He threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown. And with a shameful running game in which new addition Willis McGahee was a complete no-show, it was up to Orton to put the team on his back.

No disrespect to Tebow, but it's just not his time. The Broncos are waiting ever so impatiently for the next John Elway to grace their presence that they try to force out every quarterback who, God forbid, isn't perfect.

Kyle Orton may not be Tom Brady, but he is a good quarterback. His own fans are constantly calling for his head which doesn't make his job any easier. And the sooner Broncos fans realize that, the better off they'll be.

Although somehow I don't think they will. They were chanting for Tebow after the first half of Week 1! The team is in a rebuilding phase. And as much as no team ever wants to admit it, that's what they are. They're rebuilding.

The needs for improvement in Denver are on a higher level. They have to stop the run, Moreno and McGahee need to put up more than a combined 38 yards per game and they need to have a play maker that's going to step up and lead the team when it matters most.

After all, if it wasn't for Eric Decker's 90-yard punt return touchdown in the third quarter, the Broncos would have had nothing to show for their loss to Oakland.

The quarterback should be the least of their problems right now.
