Fantasy Football Week 2: Which Broncos Benefit from Knowshon Moreno Injury?

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

Knowshon Moreno limped to the sidelines with an injured hamstring during the Denver Broncos' 23-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders in Week 1. The fourth quarter injury occurred during a nine-yard run by the Georgia product and likely leaves the Broncos with Willis McGahee starting in the backfield.

Moreno did some jogging on the sideline after exiting the game and today John Fox said the 24-year-old was likely day-to-day, but Denver hasn't released anything definitive on him yet. I don't think he'll be able to go this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals, based on the fact that he looked to be in serious pain coming off the field. Hamstring injuries usually take a few weeks to fully heal and rushing back too soon is never a good idea.

The Broncos gained just 38 yards rushing against the Raiders with Moreno accounting for 22 and McGahee getting just three yards on four carries. If Moreno does actually miss time, expect McGahee to fill in, but don't expect him to put up big numbers.

The Broncos' offensive line looked awful on Monday night, as they allowed five sacks and couldn't open any running lanes. McGahee is most likely to get you fantasy points through the passing game—he had five catches for 32 yards on Monday night—and near the goal line.

While McGahee would be the obvious choice to benefit from Moreno's absence, I'm not loving his prospects. He should see more snaps, and therefore more carries, but Denver's receivers could actually be the ones to benefit the most from a change at running back.

Moreno owners might want to add McGahee if they're desperate at the running back spot. But if you have receiver Brandon Lloyd, you'll definitely want to start him against the Bengals this Sunday.
