Dallas Cowboys: 5 Reasons Team Is Better off Without Tony Romo

Nichole KerrSep 14, 2011

Tony Romo, the quick-moving, fast-thinking and likable quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, has almost everything going for him. A beautiful wife, an enviable salary and a massive number of fans who live, breathe and bleed Dallas Cowboy Blue.

But are the Dallas Cowboy fans as loyal to Romo as they were, say, about a week ago?

Dallas Cowboys fans love to hoop, holler and brag, “How bout’ them Cowboys?” to anyone who will listen. But what they categorically do not like to do is lose.

Over the past five seasons, Cowboy fans have supported Romo through thick and thin. But what do they have to show for it? Botched snaps, untimely interceptions, inopportune fumbles, inadequate ball protection, plus the grim reality that anytime a game ever really means anything, the only thing Romo can be counted on to do is melt down.

So while there are probably many reasons, here are five good ones that explain why the Dallas Cowboys would be better off without Tony Romo.

1. Tony Romo Hasn’t Been “Hungry” Since, Well, Ever

1 of 6

All the great ones—Muhammad Ali, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklausthey all had “it”.

It was that look in their eyes that told the opposing man or team that they meant business. With no words necessary, that look said everything but revealed nothing.

That look, which could pierce through steel and bring an opponent to his knees in frustration, encapsulates the sort of devotion and perseverance that all serious athletes possess.

Tony Romo wouldn't know a thing about it.

During the Dallas Cowboys' Week 1 Sunday Night Football game against the New York Jets, with only :09 seconds left to go in the fourth quarter, a snap flew back at Romo and bounced off his chest. For all intents and purposes, this signified the end of the game. But Romo, who looked eerily like Shirley Temple after she boarded the Good Ship Lollipop, was all giggles.

How is that even possible?

2. Does Tony Romo Even Like Playing Football?

2 of 6

Pick up an issue of US Weekly or peruse the latest headlines on TMZ and you will notice Tony Romo seems to be a permanent fixture in the, um, "society" columns. Romo is always heading to this dinner or that one, golfing in this tournament or another, partying in this city or on that beach. With Romo’s hectic social life, does he even have the energy to play football?

Don’t get me wrong, I am sure Romo is a real hoot to hang out with. But being great at anything, be it gymnastics, multiplication tables or even Scrabble, requires strong dedication and hard work.

When does Romo have the timeor energyto put that work in?

If Romo is lucky, he will play football till he is 40. That will leave plenty of time for Vegas, line dancing, golfing and whatever other debauchery he and his other old athlete cohorts dredge up.  So why not put in the work now? Why not focus on the game and on elevating the Dallas Cowboys to the elite level that their history and talent warrant?

Because, to put it simply, Romo doesn't care.

3. When the Going Gets Tough, Tony Romo Does Not Get Going

3 of 6

Winning the Super Bowl is not easy. If it were, wouldn't Dan Marino have done it?

It's a numbers gamepart luck, part talent, part determination.

We all know the best man (or team as it were) does not always win.

The key element to the formula for winning it all, is determination. If you don't have the drive to win and be successful, then just how far do you think that talent and luck will take you? Ask the Miami Heat.

The short answer is not very far. The long answer would be, not to a Super Bowl title.

The Dallas Cowboys need to get serious. They have all the puzzle pieces laid out and now they just need a leader to help them put it all together. It isn't coach Jason Garrett, it wasn't Wade Phillips and it will never be Tony Romo.

When Jerry Jones faces facts and finally lays down this losing hand, the Cowboys organization will finally identify and secure the quarterback they need to lead this team where all Cowboys fans so desperately want them to go.

All the way.

4. To Tony Romo, Football Really Is "Just a Game"

4 of 6

Football is more than "just a game". These men play for pride, for personal achievement and above all to prove that they are the best of the best in what is considered one of the most highly regarded professional sports league in the worldthe National Football League.

Tony Romo doesn't seem phased by this at all, though. What gives?

Romo doesn't seem phased because he isn't. Ever notice his constant grin? How all the players around him are laughing and snickering as if Romo just shared a great knock-knock joke?

He is having a grand old timeand why shouldn't he be? He is getting paid handsomely to do nothing.

5. The Dallas Cowboys's Loss to the New York Jets on Sunday Night Was Unforgivable

5 of 6

Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboy’s meltdown during NFL Week 1's Sunday Night Football game against the New York Jets was truly one for the ages.

Cowboy fans had listened wryly to the pre-game show as former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy predicted the Dallas Cowboys would “lose big”. But the Dallas Cowboys would quell those fears initially, when they strode out onto the field and resolutely marched down the field in their first drive of the game, scoring a touchdown on Tony Romo’s 3-yard pass to Dez Bryant.

Then it all fell apart. It began with Romo’s fumble on the Jets 2-yard line when the Cowboys were up on the Jets 24-17 with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter; and it all went down hill from there.

Romo’s career thus far can be summed up adequately by watching the highlights of this Jets-vs.-Cowboys game.

Strong plays, timely scoring, the opportunity present to win and finish strongly. Then, bedlam. Costly mistakes, inexcusable mental errors and an inability to exude strength when it mattered the most.

Enough is enough.

Conclusion: Tony Romo Has Got to Go

Baseball legend Ted Williams once said, “Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.”

Maybe Tony Romo is in the wrong sport?

Romo can be a good quarterback when the stakes are low or non-existent. But if he can’t perform when the Dallas Cowboys really need him to, then what is the point of it all?

Can the Dallas Cowboys please just finally throw in the towel?

And hand Romo a bat for Pete’s sake.
