Fantasy Baseball: Top 5 September Call-Ups Who Can Get it Done in the Playoffs
The fantasy baseball season is a long and grueling one. You have worked all year for these next couple weeks; the fantasy playoffs are here.
These five September call-ups are excellent free agent/waiver pickups that will help you win your league.
Too many fantasy GMs become over-committed to the teams that got them to the playoffs—don’t be one of them.
If you have a hole in your lineup, or a guy who has been in a serious slump, make the move for one of these studs.
5. Julio Teheran, SP, Atlanta Braves
1 of 5One will have to monitor the Braves’ probable starters, but when he is in line to pitch, Julio Teheran is a solid SP in all formats.
He’s the top pitching prospect out of the best pitching farm system in baseball, and has already shown that he can handle major league duties.
In his only September start, he held the Mets to one run over 5.1 innings for his first win at the major league level. The Braves will monitor his pitch-count closely, but he’ll see an increased work load as Jair Jurrjens is likely out for the rest of the season.
If you follow the Braves’ rotation and matchups closely, Teheran could score some easy wins this September.
4. Matt Dominguez, 3B, Florida Marlins
2 of 5The Florida Marlins have been out of it for a while, which means 3B prospect Matt Dominguez will get the chance to shine at the major league level.
He is currently behind Greg Dobbs on the depth chart at third base, but since Dobbs can play almost any position, Dominguez will see increased playing time the rest of the season.
Dominguez will hit for average, but will also contribute runs, RBI and the occasional HR. The Marlins haven’t officially name him the starter, but he’s definitely worth the add in deeper leagues.
3. Wilin Rosario, C, Colorado Rockies
3 of 5Wilin Rosario has already taken over as the starting catcher for the Colorado Rockies and hit his first MLB home run in his second game.
Chris Ianetta will get some playing time, but Rosario is a safe start at a very thin position.
He’s shown excellent power at the minor league level with 21 HRs in 101 games this season, and he will benefit from playing at the launching pad that is Coors Field.
He does strike out a lot, but he’ll be one of the better options at catcher the rest of the season. Expect a handful of HRs during the fantasy playoffs, especially when the Rockies are playing at home.
2. Dayan Viciedo, 3B, Chicago White Sox
4 of 5Though not technically a September call-up (he made his debut on August 28th), Dayan Viciedo has been tearing up major league pitching and can’t be ignored moving forward.
He is batting .353 and has reached base safely in all but one of his 14 starts since being called up. He also has five RBI and six runs scored in the middle of a mediocre White Sox lineup.
Being a third baseman, Viciedo is extremely valuable during the 2011 fantasy playoffs. He provides production in each of the five major hitting categories, and continues to improve his patience at the plate.
1. Jesus Montero, C, New York Yankees
5 of 5The Yankees aren’t starting Montero every day, but his eligibility at catcher makes him an excellent power option moving forward.
Primarily serving as the DH, Montero will likely see an increase in playing time as the Yankees continue to run away with the AL East.
He has already shown that he can hit for power with three HRs in eight games, and should see his .308 BA improve with more consistent playing time.
Like Rosario, Montero is an excellent option at a thin position. The Yankees are likely to include him on their postseason roster, so reap the benefits of New York's attempt at getting him into a groove for October.
