NFL Week 1 Results: 5 Biggest Disappointments from Opening Week
Week 1 brings a harsh reality to some teams. They're unprepared, and are trotting out an unknown product onto the NFL field.
While we're all happy to see football once again, some fans would rather not see their team play. Some teams would like a do-over.
These five teams suffered the most crushing losses of the regular season. Sadly, four out of the five were playoff teams last year. Considering the playoff turnover is 50 percent, these teams can't afford to lag.
Kansas City Chiefs
1 of 5To put it simply, no one had a worse Week 1 than the Kansas City Chiefs.
The offense looked as lost as it did during preseason, against a Bills defense that was one of the worst in the league last year. Every Chiefs fan knew they were in for a long day as soon as Dexter McCluster fumbled the opening kickoff.
The Bills, led by former Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, racked up 41 points on the Chiefs. Though the defense was absolutely horrendous, they certainly weren't helped by an absolutely inept offense. On top of the McCluster fumble deep in their own territory, the Chiefs had to endure a Jamaal Charles fumble on their own side of the field as well.
Dustin Colquitt, normally a very good punter, had the worst game of his career. The Bills ended up in Chiefs territory, or very close to it, to start almost every drive. When even your punter can't do anything right, it's time to pack it up and go home.
The Chiefs suffered their worst home loss in 35 years. To add insult to injury, Pro-Bowl safety Eric Berry had his season ended by a helmet to knee hit from Stevie Johnson. The loss is a devastating one to a Chiefs team that is already reeling.
Dallas Cowboys
2 of 5Those who have been calling for Romo's head just started sharpening their axes.
Romo played brilliantly through three quarters, and the Dallas offense moved with relative ease on a strong Jet's defense. The Cowboys seemed to have everything wrapped up when they were up by two touchdowns with 12 minutes left in the game.
It all started when Mark Sanchez found Plaxico Burress on a 26 yard back shoulder pass that brought the Jets within seven. Then Tony Romo struck.
Romo drove the Cowboys to the goal line, and when a hole opened on the offensive line Romo tried to dash through it and fumbled at the 1-yard line, turning the ball over and costing the Cowboys precious points.
The Cowboys came back out, and Romo missed on two passes forcing the team to punt. The punt was blocked by Joe McKnight and recovered for a touchdown.
The Cowboys returned to the field. Romo rolled out right, saw Dez Bryant being covered by Darelle Revis and threw it perfectly...to Revis. The Jets kick the game winning field goal as Romo fumbles twice more with only 50 seconds left on the clock.
The Cowboys had a playoff team beaten, and blew it. To say that's disappointing for a team that has enough talent to make the playoffs themselves is an understatement.
Atlanta Falcons
3 of 5The Falcons, who claimed to be the second coming of the "Greatest Show on Turf," scored a whole 12 points this weekend.
Matt Ryan, who has not played well away from his dome, threw an interception that led to a Matt Forte touchdown, and fumbled away another possession.
Michael Turner, who had been playing well, fumbled away yet another opportunity for the Falcons to score.
All in all, the Falcons were just pathetic. They lost 30 to 12 to a Bears team they exceeded by a good margin in talent. Even looking over the offensive miscues, there's no overlooking how Jay Cutler carved up their defense, completing 22-of-32 passes for two touchdowns.
Matt Forte absolutely ripped the Falcons all day. He had 16 carries for 64 yards and added 90 yards receiving and a touchdown on only five receptions.
The Falcons don't look like the 13-3 team they did last year. They'll have to take a big step to be the Super Bowl contender they think they are.
Pittsburgh Steelers
4 of 5This loss was absolutely shocking. Not because the Steelers lost, but how.
Ben Roethlisberger had the worst game of his career. He completed barely 50 percent of his passes, threw one meaningless touchdown, and turned the ball over five times by himself.
In fairness to Roethlisberger, his offensive line comes as bad as advertised. Everyone thought that Big Ben would just run around until he was able to find open receivers, but that's just not the case. This offensive line is going to get Roethlisberger killed.
On top of that, the Steelers vaunted defense was handled. Bryant McKinnie went from a 400 pound punchline to a left tackle that could lay out the likes of Troy Polamalu and James Harrison to make room for Ray Rice.
Rice had 19 carries for 107 yards, and Ricky Williams had 12 for 63 also. This is a bad sign for the the Steelers, considering they have a habit of missing the playoffs after a Super Bowl appearance.
The Steelers have plenty of time to get it together, and an easy enough schedule to do it with. But, with this performance, it's hard to be optimistic of the Steelers' title chances.
Indianapolis Colts
5 of 5In the back of everyone's mind, there might have been this small feeling that the Colt's are still the Colt's and they could pull out a few without Peyton Manning. If this week is any indication, they don't seem to stand a chance.
Kerry Collins is no substitute for Peyton Manning. No one is.
Collins completed 16-of-31 passes for an entire 197 yards and a touchdown, and most of that was garbage time. He also fumbled three times, losing two of them.
Manning was usually able to make up for the deficiencies of the defense since he could keep defenses on their toes. The defense is supposed to be quick hitting, so the Colt's can play with a lead and gain an advantage with their two bookend defensive ends. The age is definitely starting to show up front, and it only looks to get worse from here on out.
The Colt's will be playing from behind often this season, and with a defense that can't stop the run, they won't have a chance to catch up.
No team should be more worried than the Colts about their season. With Peyton Manning the Colt's are a 10 win team. Without him, they could be a two win team.
