10 Most Important Lessons from Win
Well, Luke McCown won a football game.
The newest starter for the Jaguars looked impressive in his debut as Jacksonville held off a late charge by Tennessee to win, 16-14.
The win did two things that were essential for the Jaguars. It may have quieted some critics of the team that released its starter, David Garrard, last Tuesday. It also allowed the defensive coordinator to show off new starters like Matt Roth and Dwight Lowery who were key to the win.
And if anything, winning seems to make fans happy and a little more supportive of team decisions, whether popular or not.
These are some things we learned about the Jaguars from their win.
Luke McCown Can Manage a Game
1 of 10He had one win previously in games he played in before today.'
McCown looked sharp and comfortable in the offense that offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter devised.
McCown seemed to have a good relationship with both Mike Thomas and Jason Hill.
He did not look hurried and thew the ball with accuracy, hitting on 17 of 23 passes.
The only thing he did not do was throw a touchdown. He did not, however, throw an interception.
MJD's Knee Seems Just Fine
2 of 10The first time he touched the ball, you knew he was going to have a good game.
The last time we saw Maurice Jones-Drew in a football game, it was last December.
It looked like he had not missed a beat. The 21-yard touchdown up the middle in the first half was vintage Jones-Drew and proved he could handle the load again for the team.
Matt Roth Filled in Nicely for Aaron Kampman
3 of 10He put pressure on the quarterback and made key stops when needed.
Matt Roth did not know he was starting until the day of the game, and the free agent from Cleveland responded.
The Jaguars defensive line looked better than last season, which will only help the team throughout the year
Josh Scobee Is Money
4 of 10Josh Scobee was a consistent kicker in the NFL the first half of last season.
The second half wasn't as successful.
It looks like Scobee found his mojo again.
He hit on two field goals when the team was stymied on scoring drives, giving the team a cushion when it was needed.
Mike Thomas Is Still the "Go To" Guy on This Team
5 of 10McCown and Thomas developed a fast friendship and the 5'8" receiver made key catches when the team needed them.
Last season, Thomas led the team in receptions and became the top outlet for Jaguars quarterbacks.
It looks like that trend will continue.
The Secondary Allowed Tennessee to Get Back in the Ballgame
6 of 10Well, Rashean Mathis did at least.
Kenny Britt was the thorn in the side of the safety, and the Titans receiver responded with 136 yards on five catches and two touchdowns.
Mathis needs to play better, like he showed in the preseason.
The Defense Tackled Better This Time
7 of 10One of the big things you saw with the defense, especially in the first half, was the open-field tackling by defenders.
Tennessee did not advance for extra yardage on many plays in the first and second quarters. Defenders where sure-handed and wrapped up their assignments if they got the ball through the air or on the ground.
Deji Karim Played Well as the Primary Backup
8 of 10Karim was named the backup running back to Maurice Jones-Drew when Rashad Jennings was placed on injured reserve.
He responded with a good game.
Karim had 33 yards rushing while spelling Jones-Drew, mainly in the second half.
Chris Johnson Was Held in Check
9 of 10Johnson may be paid like a playmaker, but he did not play like one today.
Johnson, who held out the preseason with a contract dispute, ran nine times for 24 yards and caught six passes for 25 yards.
The Jaguars did not allow him to be the difference maker in the game, stuffing the run game for the Titans.
The Jaguars Must Now Prepare for the Jets
10 of 10Now that they have won at home, let's see how they do on the road.
The Jaguars play in New York next weekend when they face the Jets.
New York was the AFC runner-up last season to Pittsburgh.
