UFC 134: "Shogun" Rua vs. Forrest Griffin and 5 Other Rematches We Want to See

First LastJun 7, 2018

The UFC will be bringing a stacked card to Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, and it features two highly-anticipated rematches between the top fighters in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

When Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Forrest Griffin fought at UFC 76, nobody expected the Ultimate Fighter 1 winner to pull off the massive upset he did when he submitted the Brazilian muay-thai machine in the third round. Both fighters would go on to win and lose the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

Now, Rua finds himself trying to find redemption as Griffin hopes to prove the first fight wasn't a fluke.

The other rematch that will take place at UFC 134 will be UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami.

Okami defeated Silva by disqualification after Silva used an illegal up-kick in their 2006 bout. It is the last loss of Silva's career.

These are five other rematches MMA fans wouldn't mind seeing now or later.

Notable Mention: Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald

1 of 6

A rematch between Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald might not happen anytime soon, but it is one that fans would welcome in the future when both solidify their spots as the top of the UFC's welterweight division.

The first fight was one that many saw MacDonald winning until he was stopped with just seven seconds left in the third round.

After letting MacDonald dictate the pace throughout the first two rounds, Condit picked it up in the third and punished the younger fighter with punches and elbows on the ground. The referee jumped in to save MacDonald from any more punishment in a fight he had been winning up until that point.

If either of these two ever become champion, a five-round rematch would instantly be intriguing.

No. 5: Roy Nelson vs. Brendan Schuab

2 of 6

Roy Nelson and Brendan Schaub first met in the Ultimate Fighter Season 10 Finale in December, 2009.

It didn't take very long to figure out who the winner would be, as Nelson would knock out Schaub with a brutal right hand three minutes into the first round.

Since that fight, it has been Schaub who has been the more impressive of the two. He has won four straight, including victories over Mirko "Cro Cop"  Flipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga. His next fight will be against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134.

Nelson has gone 2-2 and has back-to-back losses against top heavyweight fighters Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir. He is currently scheduled to face Mirko "Cro Cop" at UFC 137.

If Schaub wants a title shot, he may need to prove he can get past the heavy-handed Nelson first.

No. 4: Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis

3 of 6

The final WEC event hosted a lightweight championship bout between Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis in 2010.

Henderson went into the bout as the champion and fought five hard rounds before losing his title to Pettis by decision. The fight was highlighted by Pettis' Matrix-like kick off the cage that ultimately sealed the victory for him.

Both found themselves in the top of the UFC's LW division soon after, and it would be Henderson who proved to have more success. He claimed big wins over Jim Miller and Mark Bocek.

Pettis dropped a three-round decision loss to Clay Guida.

In a division that is stacked full of contenders and up-and-comers, Henderson and Pettis could afford to have a rematch inside the UFC's Octagon before or after they challenge for a title.

No. 3: Quinton Jackson vs. Dan Henderson

4 of 6

The UFC made its fourth trip to Europe to host UFC 75, which featured a title fight between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and two-time Pride Champion Dan Henderson.

Jackson walked away with a close and competitive unanimous decision after five rounds, and it would lead Henderson to move down to middleweight where he would lose to Anderson Silva soon after.

Since that fight, Henderson has gone 6-1 and solidified his spot as one of the all-time best fighters in MMA. He is currently on a three-fight win streak with knockout victories over Fedor Emelianenko, Rafael Cavalcante and Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

Jackson lost his title in his very next fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 86. He would go on to win four fights with one loss in-between against Rashad Evans. Four of those five would all go the distance.

With Jackson's title fight coming up against Jon Jones at UFC 135, he will need some legitimate contenders to defend that belt against if he emerges victorious. Why not let it be Henderson, who is the current Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion?

Even if he comes up short against Jones, it's a welcoming rematch if Jackson wants to fight for the Strikeforce LHW belt against Henderson.

No. 2: Lyoto Machida vs. Rashad Evans

5 of 6

When Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans put their undefeated records on the line at UFC 98, nobody really expected Machida to walk through Evans the way he did before knocking him out to win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

Both have had good performances since that fight, but it has been Evans who appears to be the more impressive of the two.

Since that 2008 bout, Evans has gone 3-0 with victories over Quinton Jackson, Tito Ortiz and Thiago Silva.

Machida defended his title against "Shogun" Rua before losing it to him after being knocked out in the first round of the rematch. A close loss to Jackson followed, but he rebounded with a highlight-reel front-kick KO of Randy Couture at UFC 129.

Machida was offered a rematch against Evans at UFC 133 but declined the match because he wasn't offered "Anderson Silva money."

If that's the only thing keeping the rematch from happening, it won't take very long before we see these two inside the cage and fighting each other again.

No. 1: BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch

6 of 6

Jon Fitch and BJ Penn walked away from their fight at UFC 127 knowing it had been declared a draw, but it was Fitch who felt he had proven who the better man really was that night.

Penn admitted following the decision that he didn't think that he had done enough to win the fight. After a closely-contested two rounds, Penn was absolutely dominated in the third to the point where it was scored 10-8 on many scorecards.

With Fitch forced to sit on the sidelines for most of 2011, Penn accepted a match with top contender Carlos Condit at UFC 137. Fitch eventually signed to fight Johny Hendricks later this year as well, but it was the rematch with Penn that he really wanted.

With no true welterweight contenders, they may both find themselves fighting each other in a five-round fight before they even challenge for the welterweight championship again.
