NFL Preseason Week 1: One Lesson Each Team Learned

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Here is a quick look at one lesson each NFL team learned during the first week of the 2011 preseason.

Arizona Cardinals – Kevin Kolb to Larry Fitzgerald is going to be a deadly combination. The Cardinals could still use another receiver to take the pressure off Fitzgerald, though.

Atlanta Falcons – Bringing back Jason Snelling was the right move. Michael Turner will need a strong backup as he continues to age and Jacquizz Rodgers isn't ready yet.

Baltimore Ravens – Signing Ricky Williams was a wise choice. Ray Rice struggled to gain traction in Week 1 after a disappointing 2010 and Williams provides a needed veteran presence behind him on the depth chart.

Buffalo Bills – Trading Lee Evans to the Ravens was stupid. Steve Johnson was blanketed wherever he went and that will continue without a legitimate second option.

Carolina Panthers – Jimmy Clausen is stuck in the middle. Derek Anderson gives the Panthers the best chance to win now and Cam Newton showed flashes of big-time potential, leaving Clausen in a tough spot.

Chicago Bears – Major Wright is moving toward becoming a good NFL safety. Between him and Chris Harris, the Bears safety positions are in good hands.

Cincinnati Bengals – Andy Dalton was either too scared to throw deep in his first professional game or he doesn't have the arm strength to do it. Dalton completed 11 of 15 passes, but had an abysmal 4.6 yards-per-attempt ratio.

Cleveland BrownsColt McCoy has the ability to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. His performance against most of the Packers first-team defense was encouraging.

Dallas CowboysTony Romo has completely healed from his collarbone injury last season. Maybe the Cowboys can finally live up to the preseason hype in 2011.

Denver Broncos – The quarterback debate is closer to the beginning than the end. Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow shined while Kyle Orton completed just two of six passes during his playing time.

Detroit Lions – The offense is extremely potent when everybody is healthy. Matthew Stafford looked great, but he'll need to show some durability to go along with his talent.

Green Bay Packers – James Starks and Ryan Grant will be a formidable duo in the backfield. Although they combined for just five carries they averaged 5.4 yards per touch.

Houston Texans – It's better to play it safe with injuries during the preseason. Arian Foster, Andre Johnson and Ben Tate are all dealing with minor ailments and should be getting extra rest.

Indianapolis Colts – Life without Peyton Manning sucks. If the Colts have to rely on Curtis Painter to lead the offense at any point during the regular season they are in major trouble.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Kyle Bosworth might have been a shrewd undrafted free-agent signing. The former UCLA star spent last season on injured reserve, but made seven tackles against the Patriots.

Kansas City Chiefs – You can't win if you don’t score. Without Matt Cassel, both Chiefs backup QBs put up the exact same passing line: 4-of-8 for 34 yards. Unimpressive.

Miami Dolphins – Chad Henne is still an average quarterback. Henne made some nice throws, but you can't afford to have 25 percent of your passes intercepted.

Minnesota VikingsDonovan McNabb is nothing more than an average NFL quarterback. If fans were expecting a game-breaking quarterback, they were disappointed.

New England Patriots – The Patriots are Super Bowl contenders once again. When you can rack up 47 points with most of your starters sitting out, things are looking really good.

New Orleans Saints – Rushing the quarterback won't be a problem. The Saints racked up six sacks from six different players in an easy victory over the lowly 49ers.

New York Giants – Domenik Hixon will fill the third receiver role nicely. Hixon made five catches for 86 yards and had the appearance of a true deep threat.

New York JetsPlaxico Burress is injury prone. Burress couldn't even make it through his first week of training camp without injuring his ankle. It could be a long, rusty season for him.

Oakland RaidersTrent Edwards is a good quarterback if you can convince him to throw deep. Edwards went 10-for-19 for 139 yards, including a nice 42-yard throw to Derek Hagan and a touchdown.

Philadelphia Eagles – They have a chance to be as good as advertised. The first-team offense marched down the field with ease and looked like they were ready for opening day.

Pittsburgh Steelers – With Emmanuel Sanders injured, keeping the other weapons healthy is the top priority. Ben Roethlisberger and crew played just one series.

San Diego ChargersPhilip Rivers will finish in the top three of MVP voting. Rivers completed five of his six passes with a touchdown to prove he is ready for another big season.

San Francisco 49ers – It is time to give up on Alex Smith. The former first-overall pick has been given enough chances, it is time for some fresh blood to lead the San Francisco offense.

Seattle Seahawks – The offense is going to struggle to score points. The running game has a lot of options, but none of them are great and the passing game lacks a solid QB. They did all their damage against third-stringers.

St. Louis Rams – Lance Kendricks might be the answer at tight end. The second-round pick was filling in for the injured Michael Hoomanawanui and caught five passes for 47 yards and a score.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Josh Freeman is very good and Josh Johnson isn't too shabby, either. Freeman is the clear starter, but Johnson provides a solid insurance policy for the improving Bucs.

Tennessee TitansMatt Hasselbeck is a good short-term option, but Jake Locker looks like the real deal. It won't be known until Locker goes up against the opposing team's top defensive unit, but he looked confident in his first NFL game.

Washington Redskins – Rex Grossman is attempting to back up his lofty prediction. Grossman predicted his Redskins would win the NFC East and he took the first step to proving everybody wrong with a strong outing.
