Broncos vs. Cowboys: 3 Thoughts on Dallas' Preseason Week 1 Performance

Adam SpencerAug 12, 2011

The Dallas Cowboys opened their 2011 preseason campaign with an exciting 24-23 win over the Denver Broncos.

The Cowboys are trying to get back on track this season after finishing with a disappointing 6-10 record in 2010.

Though the starters only played a couple series last night, there were plenty of good things going on that Cowboy fans should be excited.

Here's a look at three things that should give Dallas fans hope for the 2011 season.

3. Dwayne Harris and Stephen McGee Looked Good

1 of 3

The Cowboys have found their backup QB for the near future.

Former Texas A&M Aggie Stephen McGee looked good against the Broncos on Thursday night, completing 14 of 24 passes for 208 yards.

Three of his passes went for touchdowns and only one was picked off.

Also, rookie WR Dwayne Harris looked good last night, catching five passes for 127 yards—including a 76-yard catch that went for a touchdown.

Harris finished with two touchdown catches, including a 15-yard TD late in the fourth quarter that won the Cowboys the game.

He could end up winning the Cowboys' No. 3 receiver battle and could be a decent rookie WR in 2011.

2. Felix Jones Is Ready to Be a Feature Back

2 of 3

Marion Barber is gone, Tashard Choice is struggling and DeMarco Murray is hurt.

That leaves Felix Jones as the Cowboys' No. 1 running back.

He's one of the most explosive running backs in the NFL, and he showed why on Thursday night.

He only had three carries, but he had 23 yards on those carries—a 7.7 yards-per-carry average.

He also caught a screen pass and took it 16 yards for a first down.

If he can stay healthy, he could finish in the top 10 in terms of rushing yards in 2011.

1. Tony Romo Is Back and Ready to Lead the Cowboys to Playoff Contention

3 of 3

Tony Romo only played one series on Thursday night, but he gave Cowboys fans reason to be hopeful for 2011.

He went 3-for-5 for 33 yards in his brief action, but he set up Felix Jones on a beautiful screen pass.

If he can keep building momentum this preseason, it could be a good year for him and for the Cowboys.

I'm not saying Romo is going to lead the Cowboys to the playoffs, but they'll at least be in the mix in 2011.

Romo gives the Cowboys an infinitely better offense than Jon Kitna did last season.

With Jones, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Romo leading the way, the Cowboys' offense should be just fine this season.
