6 College Basketball Players Who Can Rebound Like Dennis Rodman

Ro ShiellJun 7, 2018

Dennis Rodman is one of the greatest rebounders in basketball.

The "Worm" as he is known in certain circles, is a five time NBA champion and a two time Defensive Player of the Year award winner. He led the NBA in rebounding a record seven times.

Rodman did not care much for scoring in the NBA but as a college player he was a high scorer. He also rebounded the ball at a high rate in college as he did in the NBA.

In three seasons at Southeastern Oklahoma State University he averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds.

It is worth mentioning that Southeastern Oklahoma State University is an NAIA school. Rodman who is listed at 6'6" to 6'8" depending on where you look, played there from 1983 to 1986.

As Rodman takes his place amongst the greatest players in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, what college basketball big conference player can rebound like the Worm?

I have compiled a list of six players that best fit the mold of Rodman on their team.

Duke Bluedevils: Mason Plumlee

1 of 6

One of three brothers currently on Duke team, the middle Plumlee (Mason) will be required to protect the baseline and take care of the boards for Duke next season.

The 6'10" 230 pound rising sophomore averaged 7.2 points and 8.4 rebounds last season.

He grabbed ten or more rebounds in fifteen games last season. If it wasn't for a few games where he only grabbed five or less rebounds he would have finished the season with a much higher rebounding average.

Duke will be looking for a little more consistency from No.5 next season.

Kentucky Wildcats: Terrence Jones

2 of 6

As a freshman, Terrence Jones hauled in 8.8 rebounds and 15.7 points a game last season.

The highlight of Jone's season was when he scored 27 points against Big East runner up, Notre Dame and grabbed a whopping 17 rebounds.

Jones faded scoring wise at the end of the season but still managed to grab 15 rebounds against eventual National Champions, Connecticut Huskies in Kentucky's last game of the season.

Jones was widely expected to declare for the NBA after his freshman season but shocked the world and returned to Kentucky.

Connecticut Huskies: Alex Oriakhi

3 of 6

Alex Oriakhi averaged 9.6 points and 8.7 rebounds as Connecticut captured the national championship tittle last season.

The 6'9" forward/center grabbed 21 rebounds in a one point win over Texas Longhorns in early January.

Oriakhi was second in the Big East in rebounding and seventh in blocked shots (1.6).

UConn's No.34 is back for his junior year and will make the Huskies a favored team in the Big East.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Trevor Mbakwe

4 of 6

Trevor Mbakwe is a 6'8" rising senior for Tubby Smith and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who averaged 13.9 points and 10.5 rebounds last season.

He snagged 16 rebounds four times during the season, the last time against a formidable Illinois team.

Mbakwe, last season's Big Ten rebounder, is currently providing toughness for team USA at the World University games in China.

Ohio State Buckeyes: Jared Sullinger

5 of 6

Jared Sullinger does so many things well he doesn't get enough credit for being an elite rebounder. The freshman averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds last season.

His best rebounding game was a 30 point, 19 boards effort against South Carolina last December.

The 6'9" rising sophomore is one of the best offensive rebounders in the game. He was second in the Big Ten in rebounding and top 20 in all of the NCAA.

North Carolina Tar Heels: John Henson

6 of 6

John Henson was the twenty first leading rebounder in all of college basketball last season. He was second to departed Maryland forward, Jordan Williams, in the ACC.

The 6'10" forward led the ACC in blocked shots per game (3.2) and scored 11.7 points and grabbed 10.2 rebounds a game. He was seventh in the NCAA in blocked shots per game.

In the final 16 games for the Tar Heels, Henson failed to grab double digit rebounds in only the last game of the season, against Kentucky, where he had only 9 boards. North Carolina was 13-3 in that stretch.

Henson will be the anchor of a favored North Carolina as they enter the season as the consensus preseason No.1 team.
