Chad Henne Is Proving He's Not the Man for Miami Dolphins' QB Job

Joseph HealyJun 7, 2018

The draw to Chad Henne as a quarterback is obvious enough. At 6'3" and 230 pounds, he has all the size benchmarks you want in a quarterback.

Henne is tall enough to see over his line and read the defense prior to the play. His height also keeps passes from being batted down at the line of scrimmage. At 230 pounds, Henne can withstand the beating that comes with a long, physical 16-game season in the NFL.

He also has a cannon for an arm. Henne can make all the throws a quarterback needs to make, and when he is on, he can thread the needle through multiple defenders to complete a long pass.

The QB also has the college pedigree you like to see. He won a ton of games as a four-year starter at Michigan in one of the nation's toughest conferences.

So far, Henne has just failed to put it all together as a professional.

As a rookie, he didn't get any playing time to speak of, but he has been the starting quarterback for the Dolphins most of the last two seasons.

In 2009, he threw for 2,878 yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games. In 2010, he threw for 3,301 yards and 15 touchdowns in 15 games.

The downside is the fact that in neither of those seasons did he throw for more touchdowns than interceptions.

For his career, Henne has 27 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He has completed just more than 61 percent of his passes as a professional, but that's not enough on its own to make him the quarterback the Dolphins need.

Henne simply falls short of expectations—there's no other way to put it. It's clear, at this point, that Henne will make several great throws in a game, and he'll throw for a decent amount of yardage, but he'll always be undone by that backbreaking interception at the most inopportune time.

The fans certainly see it. That's why they have been so vocal in their support of making a trade for the Broncos' Kyle Orton. And if the fans see it, you know Dolphins coaches and executives see it.

If the Dolphins' front office still believes in Henne, they aren't showing it. They tried with all their might to make that rumored trade with Denver happen, and as an insurance policy, they went out and signed free agent Matt Moore. While Moore probably isn't going to challenge Henne to be the starter, that at least tells you that they know they have to bring in a solid backup.

Of course, Henne is only 26. He still has time to prove he belongs, but that time is running short.
