Randy Moss: 5 Reasons Why He Is a First Ballot Hall of Famer

Luis HerreraMay 31, 2018

Randy Moss said, “No más.” One of the best receivers of all time has decided to retire prematurely instead of accepting a lesser offer.

Incredibly, a debate has started in the media: Does he deserves to be a first ballot Hall of Famer?

I say “incredibly” because it shouldn’t even be a debate. Let’s remind the 44 voters why Moss has to be enshrined in Canton in his first opportunity.

(Of course, it can happen in 2016…or later, if he “pulls a Brett Favre” and comes back in three weeks.)

He Has the Stats

1 of 5

Moss is ranked fifth all time in yards by reception with 14,858; he is also eighth in receptions (954) and fifth in all-purpose touchdowns (154)

He also had 10 seasons with 1,000+ yards by reception and nine with at least 10 touchdowns (tied with Jerry Rice), among many other records.

He is a four-time first-team All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler.

And let’s not forget Moss “only” played 13 seasons, while Rice played 20 years (16 of those with Joe Montana and Steve Young), Terrell Owens played 15 and Cris Carter played 16.

He Broke Jerry Rice’s TD Record

2 of 5

In 20 seasons, Jerry Rice compiled a huge amount of receiving records, but Randy Moss broke one of the most impressive.

His 23 touchdowns in one season (2007) is a milestone almost impossible to reach.

He Brought Tom Brady to a New Level

3 of 5

Until 2006, the rivalry between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning was clearly defined: Brady had the Super Bowl rings, Manning had the stats.

Brady was Joe Montana, Manning was Dan Marino.

In February of 2007, Manning finally got his Super Bowl victory.

But then the Patriots formed the Brady-Moss combo, and they were an instant success.

After six seasons with second and third-rate receivers, Moss gave Brady the big weapon he needed to reach a new level.

Wes Welker also helped a lot, of course, but it was Moss who catapulted Brady’s numbers.

It’s Not a Debate: He IS One the Best 5 WRs Ever

4 of 5

Usually, when a great player retires, his spot in history is subject to debate. “He was one of the best,” is a common phrase.

But only a small bunch, the truly special players, get real consideration for “he was the best.”

Randy Moss IS the best deep-threat ever in the NFL. And he is also, at least, one of the best five wide receivers of all time.

Actually, many could say he is No..2, only behind Jerry Rice.

It’s About What He Did on the Field

5 of 5

If Randy Moss doesn’t get elected to the Hall of Fame in his first opportunity, we all know the reason: his “off-the-field issues.”

But the 44 Board of Selectors members are requested to vote in regard to a player's performance on the field, personal feelings aside.

Being part of the Board of Selectors is an honor, reserved only for very experienced journalists like Peter King, John Clayton, Len Shapiro, Jim Trotter or Len Pasquarelli..

If any of the voters allow his personal dislike of Moss to be a reason for not giving him a vote, then he doesn’t deserve to be a part of the selection process.
