Randy Moss to the Philadelphia Eagles: Why We Should Care About This Scenario

Joseph HealyJun 1, 2018

Just a couple days after he announced that he would be retiring, there are rumblings that the Philadelphia Eagles have interest in wide receiver Randy Moss.

And why wouldn't they?

They are clearly doing everything they can to put themselves in position to win this year, and adding a wide receiver with the pedigree of Randy Moss would be another step in that direction.

The Eagles don't have a ton of money to spend, thanks to their flurry of moves so far in free agency, but judging by the lack of interest in Moss so far, I don't think they'd need all that much cash to get it done anyway.

The deal that got them Ronnie Brown is a one-year deal for about one million dollars plus incentives. If you can get Moss to come to Philly for one year on a deal like that, you have to do it. You are playing for this year, so if it doesn't work, you cut ties with him before next season when he walks as a free agent.

I have no doubt that Moss has something left in the tank. Will he be the Randy Moss that made Daunte Culpepper look great with the Minnesota Vikings and helped the New England Patriots to a perfect regular-season record in 2007?

Of course not.

But he also isn't nearly as bad as it would seem coming off of last season. His production early in the season with the Patriots wasn't all that bad. He only caught nine passes in four games, but he did have three touchdown catches.

He averaged over three catches per game for Minnesota and had two touchdown catches. Those numbers really aren't too bad for a player his age, but I think his perceived failure in Minnesota had more to do with expectations for Moss being set too high.

I'll grant you that the Tennessee Titans' Moss experiment was a disaster, but I don't know that many receivers would play well with the likes of Rusty Smith throwing passes to them.

The biggest factor in his success in Philadelphia would be proper expectations. He is coming off a tough season, so the team will likely come into the year with the attitude that anything they get from him will be nice.

He'll also have a ton of help. Michael Vick is talented enough at quarterback to take a lot of pressure off of everyone. The running game has been upgraded, as Ronnie Brown joins the dynamic LeSean McCoy in the backfield.

Fellow wide receiver DeSean Jackson's holdout appears to be close to over, and Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and Brent Celek are all great receiving options.

With those offensive weapons, Moss could easily have a 60-70 catch season with six or eight touchdown catches. And that might be a conservative estimate. Moss would be listed as the fifth or sixth option a defense has to worry about. He would see his share of one-on-one matchups and mismatches.

The news of Moss signing with a team will likely be greeted with a collective yawn from fans and media, but if he is headed to Philadelphia, you had better sit up and take notice.

To paraphrase a receiver often mentioned in the same breath as Randy Moss, if he ends up in Philadelphia, get your popcorn ready.
