Why Braylon Edwards Would Put Philadelphia Eagles in League of Their Own

Donald WoodAug 1, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the most potent offenses in the entire league, but there are still areas of need that the team has yet to address.

While the Eagles have added many key pieces on defense, like cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, end Jason Babin, and tackle Cullen Jenkins, Philadelphia has added only a backup quarterback and an offensive lineman on the opposite side of the ball.

After a huge offensive season last year, no one would have blamed the Eagles for the route they took, but they may be in more dire need than thought.

Young Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin was supposed to have his breakout season this year, but a bout with Mono might have him down for awhile.

With Maclin out of the picture for the near future, all of the attention turns to the team’s star receiver, DeSean Jackson. Jackson has missed the beginning part of the shortened training camp due to his holdout, but all reports are that the two sides will be coming together soon to work out a new deal.

All of this turmoil at the wideout spot is not what the Eagles want to hear if they are building a team to win right now.

At this moment, the Philadelphia Eagles sit at just under $3 million under the cap, but a trade of Asante Samuel would leave more than enough cash to bring in former New York Jets receiver Braylon Edwards.

The move might have some people scratching their heads, but a one-year deal for a tall receiver who can go up and catch the ball in the red zone is a no-brainer.

For the questions about his pass-catching abilities, I look to the two drops last season and see that this would be a very wise temporary fix for the Philadelphia Eagles.

If Philadelphia could get him to agree to a cheaper contract for one season, they might even be able to sign Edwards and keep Asante Samuel.

The team has pulled off some wild moves this offseason, but something tells me that this ride isn’t over yet.
