Malcom Floyd Rumors: With Unlikely Return to Chargers, Will WR Land with 49ers?
Malcom Floyd is becoming more and more valuable as free agent wide receivers keep signing on with new teams.
In the past few days, we have seen big name guys like Plaxico Burress, Sidney Rice, Santana Moss and Santonio Holmes all sign fresh contracts. We have also seen quite a few No.2 through four wide outs garner new deals.
Players such as Michael Jenkins, Donte’ Stallworth, Mike Sims-Walker and Roy Williams all found themselves with a new team and contract.
With the number of potential No.1 or two receivers available in free agency declining, the value of someone like Malcom Floyd is conversely going up.
Floyd has been a decent receiver in the high-octane San Diego Chargers’ offense over the past few years. The Wyoming product started getting noticed in 2009, when he had a decent year, putting up 776 yards on 45 receptions.
He went into the next season as the No. 2 option behind Pro Bowler Vincent Jackson but immediately got a bump up to No. 1 after Jackson decided to embark on a lengthy hold out.
The Chargers are apparently angling to attempt to re-sign Malcom Floyd but his asking price is way too steep for them, which may or not be inflated by the dwindling market. His agent is looking for $5 million per season, but will most likely get far below that number for his client.
The 49ers are the most likely candidate to pry Floyd away from the Chargers. The team is apparently spooked about Michael Crabtree’s hurt foot. Crabtree is expected to miss the entire preseason and it could now possibly be worse than that.
The Niners already made runs at Plaxico Burress and Chad Ochocinco, so the team seems to be looking for more than a preseason body.
Malcom Floyd would be a solid replacement and would really have a chance to shine with a new team. Floyd faced a number of tough corners in the AFC West and had decent production, but if he moves to the NFC West, Malcom could be poised for a breakout season.
If Floyd lives up to his potential as a six-foot-five receiver who ran a 4.44s 40-yard-dash and hit 38” on his vertical in the combine, the 49ers could possibly make a run at the NFC West title.
Alex Smith needs a reliable target besides his TE Vernon Davis, and Floyd could be that guy. He has the ability to put up big fantasy numbers and help the team win in a number of ways.
It also seems like Crabtree isn’t going to be back for some time, so Floyd could establish himself as the No.1 receiver in San Fran for years to come if he plays his cards right.
Floyd has a lot of potential and a change of scenery, particularly San Francisco, would be good for him.
