Wimbledon 2011 Results: Why Sabine Lisicki Is All England Club's Breakout Star
The Wimbledon Championships always provides plenty of drama and excitement, but this year could be one of the finest years in recent memory.
Sabine Lisicki has shocked two top ten players to advance to the semifinals on the women's side. On the other side of the draw, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came back from two sets down to defeat Roger Federer to advance to the semifinals. It was the first time Federer had ever lost in a grand slam after being ahead by two sets.
Lisicki is becoming a rising star and she will face off against Maria Sharapova in the semifinals. There is no doubt that she is quickly emerging as an elite player and she has a chance to knock off one of the most famous female tennis players when they meet in the semifinals.
Lisicki has used the 2011 Wimbledon Championships to her advantage to become an emerging star in the tennis world.
From Qualifier to Semifinal
1 of 5Sabine Lisicki was not granted permission to play in this tournament, she had to earn it. Lisicki got into the field by winning a qualifying event.
It is extremely rare for a qualifying player to advance as far as she has and to knock off two of the top ten players in the world in the process.
Last year, Kaia Kanepi got into the tournament through qualifying and advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Petra Kvitova. With the quarterfinal victory, Lisicki became just the second woman in the history of Wimbledon to advance to the semifinals when getting into the field via a qualifier.
Fighting Back from Injury
2 of 5Lisicki was once ranked the No. 22 player in the world in 2009, but injuries slowed her down greatly since then.
She had multiple injuries during the 2010 season and saw herself fall outside the top 200 in the world rankings. So far in 2011, she has fought back into the top 100 and will easily be ranked in the top 50 after Wimbledon.
It is a great story that fans will be sure to love and there is no doubt that she picks up more fans with every match she plays.
Youth
3 of 5At just 21 years of age, Lisicki has not reached her full potential. She would likely be a much better player if she were not worn down by injuries in 2010.
However, she still has room to develop and she has already proven that she can match up against some of the premier players on tour, including French Open Champion Li Na.
If Lisicki continues to develop as a player, she can easily crack the top ten within the next year and she could be a threat to win a grand slam very soon.
Success
4 of 5Success brings fans and success turns players into stars. It is impossible to become a star if success does not follow you, unless you're Anna Kournikova.
Lisicki has proven that she can become a winner at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships and her success will not end at the All England Club.
She won a couple matches at the Australian Open back in 2008 when she was healthy and she should continue to win more now that she is healthy and has gained experience at Wimbledon.
Talent
5 of 5In order to become successful, you need to have the talent to defeat the premier players in the world. She has already proven that she can beat the top players in the world just days apart.
She has an incredible serve and has proven that she can return some of the best serves in the game. Even though she will head home just one match short of the finals, she can leave the All England Club knowing that she proved she has all the talent in the world.
With each match she plays, she is gaining popularity and proving that she has what is takes to become one of the stars in women's tennis.
