NFL Trade Speculation: 6 Trades That Will Come out of Nowhere in 2012

Hayden BirdJun 27, 2011

Apparently there's a new CBA in the works for NFL fans to cheer about.

The funny part is that most of the fans won't be cheering too loudly, since the entire lockout "drama" really put most of them to sleep. The lockout is boring.

There's been no free agency, no OTAs. No nothing (except the draft, which itself was weird because of the lockout).

Yet as the owners and players appear to be closing in on a new, long term deal (fingers crossed), we can be more sure that next year's offseason will be more regular.

Here's a look at some potential trades that could be in the works down the road. (Keep in mind most of this is speculative, but it creates interesting thought so why not have a stab at it?)

No. 6: Colts Moving Heaven and Earth to Help Peyton

1 of 6

This one I could see if for no other reason than the fact that Peyton Manning isn't getting any younger. The window of opportunity to win with him will close sooner than people might think.

I'll define "heaven and earth" probably as a first-round draft pick, which they would trade in order to secure a successful short term future to make a few more runs with Manning at the helm.

Since Manning will be 36, getting someone who can help immediately will be the key.

As the defense has been the weak part, I'd say the Colts would chase someone who could help out stopping the run.

So they'd be on the lookout for someone like Lofa Tatupu, a quality veteran on a team whose stock probably isn't rising and will therefore be available. In fact, they might not even have to throw in a first rounder.

No. 5: Reggie Bush to the Rams

2 of 6

This one might be less surprising, since there are rumors about it happening before the start of this year.

But I'm not so sold on it happening this offseason, so I guess the surprise here will be that it could take an additional season.

Still, I do think it will happen.

Bush will find the New Orleans backfield way too crowded after the Saints drafted Heisman winner Mark Ingram. He'll demand a way out and this could be it.

Since the Rams need weapons to put around the young Sam Bradford, Bush's versatility will be an appealing thing. Probably a mid-round draft pick would be enough for the Saints, who are looking to clear cap space anyway.

No. 4: Michael Crabtree to the Bears

3 of 6

The talented Texas Tech receiver has had a quiet introduction to the NFL. And with the 49ers again resolved to make Alex Smith their quarterback, Crabtree's situation doesn't seemed destined to improve in the next year.

So both parties (the 49ers and Crabtree) could be searching for a way out.

Shooting him over to the Bears might not be such a bad idea, since Chicago needs a leading wideout for Jay Cutler.

No. 3: Osi Umenyiora to the Jets

4 of 6

This one could have Giants fans up in arms, but the situation could be right.

Osi might not be used to playing a more stand-up outside linebacker position, but the impending departure/retirement of Shaun Ellis will leave a hole that needs to be filled in a position Osi is more familiar with (defensive end).

And Osi has never been one to suppress his views in a situation. He's not overly happy with the Giants management and their supposed refusal to discuss an extension.

Meanwhile, Rex Ryan would love to have a man that's amassed an impressive amount of sacks in his career.

This could cost the Jets a second or third rounder, but that could be a bargain.

No. 2: Chad Ochocinco to the Patriots

5 of 6

Ocho's value has been hurt in the last year, given the fact that he's no youngster anymore and also the era he's been attached to (aka the Carson Palmer era) appears to be ending in Cincinnati.

Yet I'm not so sure he'll be traded this year. That would take a lot in terms of a team really wanting to move a first rounder for him (unlikely) and Carson Palmer's situation being cleared up soon (also unlikely).

So that would leave him a Bengal until next year, at which point the Patriots could be waiting.

They showed with Randy Moss that veteran wide receivers sometimes just need a change of environment to excel again. Like Umenyiora, it might only cost a 2nd or 3rd rounder to get hold of a great NFL deep threat.

No. 1: Corey Webster to the Colts

6 of 6

After drafting Prince Amukamara, the Giants look pretty set at cornerback.

In fact, they might be a little too set at that position. Having four competent cornerbacks might be a little redundant.

So why not explore a possible trade?

And with the Colts (as I said earlier) determined to add someone to help them win in the short term, Webster could part of the answer (along with the aforementioned run-stop help).

He's a Super Bowl winning cornerback who proved in that run (and frankly in the last few seasons) that he's capable of shutting down top NFL talent.

His services would require a higher draft pick, but probably not a first rounder. This ranks at No. 1 simply because I think most people would predict the Giants to trade Aaron Ross, not Webster.
