NFL Free Agency: Terrell Owens and 9 Free Agents to Move When the Lockout Ends
There's a ton of talented free agents in the NFL right now, and they have gone...nowhere? Oh that's right, this little thing called the lockout is still in effect. Let's hope that ends soon.
In all seriousness, however, the second that the lockout does end there will be a lot of activity within the NFL. Tons of free-agent signings and trades will take place, and it will be very intriguing to see where everyone winds up.
Some players, for example free agent Peyton Manning, will no doubt re-sign with their current squad. A large percentage of the free agents, however, will be moving to a new American city for this next NFL season.
Who are they? Please click "next slide."
10. (RB) DeAngelo Williams
1 of 10DeAngelo Williams is coming off a miserable season for the Carolina Panthers where he was as bad as they were. He fought injuries all season and eventually ended the season on injured reserve.
Jonathan Stewart is younger and quicker than Williams and performed well last season.
The Panthers have a ton of issues to address, and resigning Williams to a hefty contract is not on top of the to-do list. Don't be surprised to see Williams in Denver next season, who lack a strong running back and are now coached by Williams ex-coach, John Fox.
9. (RB) Darren Sproles
2 of 10Darren Sproles has been outperformed in San Diego by fellow running back Mike Tolbert. Tolbert is the cheaper option for the Chargers, and the better one, so Sproles will be gone.
The little man has a ton of speed but lacks consistency. Nonetheless, tons of teams would love to have him and use him both as a halfback and a kick-returner.
According to Sports Illustrated, the Chargers have reportedly tendered Sproles a contract, in which teams will have to give the Chargers a first- and third-round pick if they sign him.
8. (WR) Randy Moss
3 of 10Wherever Randy Moss goes, let's just hope that he stays there for the entire season. Last year we saw Randy play for the New England Patriots, the Minnesota Vikings and the Tennessee Titans.
The aging Moss, once one of the most elite receivers in the game, has been criticized for lack of effort and not living up to his name. It's very possible that his best days are behind him, but there are still a few teams out there who will take that chance.
7. (OT) Matt Light
4 of 10Matt Light is now 33 years old, and despite his brilliant career with the New England Patriots, his contract is up, and it may be time that him and the Patriots part ways.
For what it would cost to re-sign a player of his caliber, the Patriots would rather start fresh with a young player who has a full career in front of him. They drafted Colorado's Nate Solder with their first pick in this year's draft, a telling sign that Light's days in Foxboro are over.
Don't feel bad for him though; tons of teams will pay good money for his size, athleticism and experience.
6. (DE) Cullen Jenkins
5 of 10Cullen Jenkins had his best season of his career this past year. In only 11 games, Jenkins accumulated seven sacks for the Green Bay Packers.
Jenkins has never been a top-caliber defensive end, and now may be his chance, since he has shown maturity and experience have paid off.
The Packers have a hefty list of players to resign, and I think they will let Jenkins go.
5. (LB) Paul Posluszny
6 of 10Paul Posluszny has been one of the few bright spots on a pretty dismal Buffalo Bills defense the last few seasons. In four seasons, he has racked up 398 tackles.
Posluszny’s negative comes in his inability to stay healthy, but nonetheless, he is a great linebacker and a consistent player when he is on the field.
The Bills would obviously love to re-sign him, but other teams will make him good offers, and anything is more tempting than playing for the Bills.
4. (WR) Malcolm Floyd
7 of 10A lot of people think Malcom Floyd can be a No. 1 wide receiver on another team, and this is the season where he will get the chance to prove that.
He’s been a solid No. 2 or 3 wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers in his years there, but he has had Philip Rivers throwing him the ball.
Fellow Charger Vincent Jackson is also a free agent this offseason, and the Chargers will spend more money and energy to re-sign him. Floyd will go elsewhere and have the chance to shine.
3. (DB) Nnamdi Asomugha
8 of 10Nnamdi Asomugha has been arguably the best defensive back in the league over the last three years. At 29 years old, he is in the prime of his career (for a cornerback) and teams will be trading limbs to sign him.
I expect Asomugha to entertain quite a few offers before he signs a deal, but one thing is for sure. He will not be an Oakland Raider next season.
The Decision 2.0, anyone?
2. (DB) Antonio Cromartie
9 of 10Antonio Cromartie, along with fellow New York Jet cornerback Darrelle Revis, was part of one of the most lethal defensive back tandems in the league last season. The two turned the Jets defense into a force to be reckoned with.
Cromartie is known to be a bit difficult and certainly is a big-talker, but this shouldn’t cause too many teams to hesitate in signing him.
The Jets have a lot of free agents to sign, and I think they will pass on Cromartie, focus on some other players and let Kyle Wilson step up to replace him.
Wouldn’t it be fun if Cromartie went to the Oakland Raiders and Nnamdi Asomugha to the Jets?
1. (WR) Terrell Owens
10 of 10Terrell Owens, arguably the most flamboyant and dynamic player of the past 15 years, is once again a free agent after a very successful one-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Owens is no spring chicken, yet his athleticism and resume is fantastic enough for a few teams to sign the veteran wide receiver.
Unlike some veteran wide receivers, Owens is a hustler who works hard to put up stats that not only benefit himself but whatever team he is on.
Worse comes to worse, no one re-signs Owens, and he becomes, undoubtedly, one of the most entertaining NFL analysts in the market, or just a flat out actor (He has expressed interest).
