Barry Bonds Offers to Fund College Education for Bryan Stow's Children

Doug MeadMay 25, 2011

So often in the last several years, we have heard the name of Barry Bonds and have immediately associated it with negative thoughts.

The allegations of steroid use, his recent trial for perjury and obstruction of justice, and reports of infidelity.

Now, however, Barry Bonds' name is associated with an act of great kindness and generosity.

An attorney who now represents the family of Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was brutally attacked on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium, has indicated that former Giants' slugger Barry Bonds has graciously offered to fund the college education of Bryan Stow's two children.

Stow, who was moved to a San Francisco area hospital earlier this month so he could be closer to home, was visited by Bonds on April 22 when Stow was still at a Los Angeles hospital.

According to the attorney, Bonds spent an hour in the room with Stow and left behind an autographed baseball bat for his two children, who are currently in grade school.

According to NBCBayArea.com:

""It was extraordinary of Barry Bonds, I thought," Girardi said. "He didn't say anything about it to the press. This was just a gift he gave  the family because he knew that it was going to be pretty important to the  kids.""

The attorney, Thomas Girardi, made the revelation about Bonds' generosity during a press conference announcing that the Stow family was suing the Los Angeles Dodgers and owner Frank McCourt for an undisclosed amount of money, to pay for the medical expenses that Bryan Stow has incurred.

The suit alleges that the Dodgers have "shown a total disregard for public safety."

The suit also alleges that McCourt's financial mismanagement of the team and cutbacks he made in stadium security indirectly led to the beating of Stow.

Current Giants players, including Tim Lincecum and Jeremy Affeldt, have also shown their generosity in helping the Stow family during their very trying time, donating thousands of dollars to the Stow family fund.

Kudos to Barry Bonds. Say what you want about him, this is an extreme act of generosity and kindness that should not be overlooked.
