Carson Palmer: Cincinnati Bengals Owner Mike Brown Tells QB to Stay or Retire

Matt MillerMay 23, 2011

Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown is known as being a bit, well how can we put this nicely, stubborn.

In a statement Monday Bengals owner Mike Brown told Albert Breer of NFL Network the team hopes Carson Palmer will be back in 2011, that the Bengals will not trade him and that he can either play or retire.

Brilliant move, Mikey boy.

You have a quarterback whom many feel could be worth at least a second-round pick, you just drafted his successor and now you're going to draw a line in the sand and tell him to play or retire?

This is why the Bengals haven't won a Super Bowl. This is why the Carson Palmer wants out of town. And more importantly, this is why the Bengals will fail to sign or re-sign any free agents without a criminal record or otherwise troubled past.

Tell me one NFL player who would want to play for this owner if he had a choice? Cedric Benson and Terrell Owens had to go to Cincinnati—no one else wanted them.

The Bengals had hoped to re-sign cornerback Johnathan Joseph, a high-talent corner who could command big money on the open market. Do you think he will give Mike Brown a "home team" discount?

If so I have property on the moon I'd like to sell you.

Brown's hard-line against Palmer is simply idiotic machismo. Brown's ego has been hurt by Palmer asking to be traded, and like a little kid he's going to throw his temper tantrum so that in the end he can say that he won.

The thing is, Mike, your customers are the ones losing and sooner or later they are simply going to stop showing up.
