Donovan McNabb: 5 Best Fit Teams for McNabb to Prove He's Got It

Wes ODonnellMay 17, 2011

There has been a lot of talk about Donovan McNabb lately, and while most of it stems from the fact that we have nothing else to talk about, McNabb's star is certainly fading fast.

Sure, the information about him possibly retiring could have been leaked by his own people so we still talk about him, and if that is the case, at least they did their jobs.

Yesterday I talked about McNabb's legacy if he were to retire this year, but now we are going to look at the possibility of him playing again.

It seems that Washington is completely done with No. 5, and he didn't do much last year to challenge that anyway.

While a number of teams did address their major need for a quarterback in this year's draft, there a few teams that didn't do anything.

Ironically enough, Washington is one of those teams, but we do not expect McNabb back in D.C. with Shanahan this year.

Here is a look at five teams that would give McNabb a shot at redemption if he wanted it.

1. Minnesota Vikings

While I firmly believe Minnesota will open the season with Christian Ponder under center, this team would give McNabb his best chance to win immediately.

The Vikings (assuming they re-sign Sidney Rice) will boast a group offensive skill weapons better than what McNabb had in Brian Westbrook and Terrell Owens, and that was the best unit he ever had.

He's always put up big numbers (although Andy Reid's offense will do that) and has shown the ability to win football games.

In Minnesota he would just have to do enough to back defenses off the line of scrimmage, hit open receivers like Rice and Percy Harvin and not turn the ball over.

It would be close to home, it would give him the best opportunity to win and he'd also have a rookie backup that could essentially push him to play better.

2. Arizona Cardinals

There might not be a more anxious receiver in the league than Larry Fitzgerald.

After a year of Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton, Fitz is ready to play quarterback and receiver by himself.

I am not as high on the Cardinals being "a quarterback away" from contending in the NFC West, but the West is so bad that they will be better.

With a new running back added to the mix in Ryan Williams and a heavier emphasis on actually using the run game, McNabb would have the chance to work play-action with Fitz in a much easier manner.

This team will not be great, but if given the opportunity McNabb would at the very least be able to make it better.

3. Oakland Raiders

It is a coincidence that the top three teams on this list are run-first offenses?

No, not at all.

McNabb isn't good enough to carry a team by himself, but he is talented enough to work the play-action pass and find open receivers.

Oakland is unsure of what it has in Jason Campbell, and McNabb would easily provide a push for him and vice versa.

If given the opportunity to start in Oakland, McNabb would have an established running game and a number of speedy weapons on the outside.

Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford and Darrius Heyward-Bey would be able to stretch the field and use the talents of McNabb's big arm, especially the latter two.

4. Miami Dolphins

Will Chad Henne ever develop? That is up for debate, but the Dolphins aren't too far away from giving up on him.

If McNabb were to be added to the roster, there is a good chance they would let him have a chance to start.

If Brandon Marshall returns healthy and out of legal trouble, he's a legitimate go-to receiver on the outside.

While Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams might not return, rookie Daniel Thomas has the ability to carry the load earlier and could actually be a player.

They helped the interior of the offensive line with Mike Pouncey, and they'll find that it will help the run game immensely.

McNabb would have a chance to play for a team with a legit defense and a few weapons on the outside.

It wouldn't necessarily translate to a playoff berth, but they'll be competitive.

5. Tennessee Titans

What do you know? Another run-first offense.

However, this time I think McNabb would have to do more than with any of the aforementioned four.

The Titans just simply aren't that good.

Rookie quarterback Jake Locker is not ready to start, and McNabb's playing style could actually be a tool for Locker to learn from.

Chris Johnson is a great running back, but he cannot do it all by himself.

Whenever Kenny Britt grows up, the Titans will be better for it, but that time hasn't come yet.

If McNabb were to land in Tennessee, I would A) be surprised because this team isn't ready to compete and B) think the only positive that would come of it would be on Locker's behalf.
