Gus Johnson: Fan-Favorite Broadcaster Reportedly Headed for Fox

Zachary D. RymerMay 9, 2011

In the realm of sports broadcasters, there really isn't anybody who can match Gus Johnson's awesomeness. The longtime CBS announcer is as excitable as they come and it's gotten to the point where it's pretty hard to imagine March Madness without his voice.

Well, it sounds like we're going to have to come to grips with that notion pretty soon. A couple days after news broke that Johnson and CBS could not agree on a new deal, a Monday report from the New York Daily News is claiming that Johnson is officially taking his talents to Fox.

"CBS declined to match Fox's offer," said a source. "They let Johnson's people know today."

The word is that Fox is going to use Johnson as an NFL and Pac-12 football play-by-play man.

A CBS source told the Daily News that there's more to Johnson's departure than just money. Apparently, some of CBS Sports' other voices were none too thrilled with Johnson's popularity. Indeed, there are poor sports in broadcasting too.

Oh well. CBS' loss is Fox's gain in this situation. It's definitely a bummer that Johnson is not going to be a part of the NCAA Tournament anymore, but one can certainly conjure worse duties than pro and college football. Shoot, people would probably watch curling if they knew Johnson was on the call.

Not that there's anything wrong with curling, of course.
