Breaking News: Novak Djokovic Stuns Rafael Nadal in Madrid!
Stop the presses, Novak Djokovic has defeated Rafael Nadal in Madrid.
If you did not see Novak Djokovic’s current streak as a sign he is on his way to the very top of men’s tennis, you should sit up and take notice now—this man is the best player currently playing men's tennis.
Not only is Rafa’s streak on clay (37 wins in a row) over, but Djokovic has now dismissed the world No. 1 in three consecutive Masters 1000 meetings in 2011.
Djokovic got of to a quick start in the final, leading 4-0 in the opening set. Nadal responded in typical energetic fashion, managing to claw his way back on serve at 5-5, before Djokovic raised his game further to take first set 7-5.
The second set was tighter, full of mesmeric rallies, powerful winners and a low unforced error count as both players blazed incredible winners. Nadal struggled with the depth Djokovic put on his shots all afternoon and the Serb’s return was phenomenal all evening.
At 5-4 in the second, Djokovic turned on the style to give himself three match-points, of which he converted the second to send an eerie murmur around the Madrid court.
In his 10th attempt, Djokovic finally beat Nadal on clay for the first time, and, in Madrid!
It is 32 in a row now for Djokovic in 2011, 34 in total—is McEnroe’s streak of 42 under threat?
Whatever your views on Djokovic, one thing is certain, this can only be a fascinating turn in men's tennis as we head towards the French Open.
