NFL Draft Busts: The Worst Selection Ever of Each Pick in the First Round

Mike BurkeApr 19, 2011

The draft bust.ย  We get them every year.ย  Players that we think have endless potential just don't live up to all the hype.

Sometimes it's because of injuries.ย  Sometimes its because they can't handle being a star in the NFL.ย  No matter what the case is, we've seen a ton of them in the past and will continue to see them in the future.

Today we take a trip down NFL draft bust lane and reflect on some of the biggest draft busts of all-time.ย  You may be used to looking at those draft busts who were selected with the top picks in the draft.

However, today we'll look at those who have been busts from the first overall selection all the way down to the 32nd overall selection.

Patrick Ramsey (Washington Redskins โ€“ 2002)

Coming out of Tulane, Ramsey appeared as a very gifted prospect both academically and athletically.ย  However, Ramsey struggled to adjust to Steve Spurrierโ€™s new fun and gun offensive scheme.ย  This continued through the 2003 season, before Spurrier was fired.

Ramsey continued to play with the Redskins through 2005, proving to be nothing but mediocre at best.

Since then, Ramsey has made his rounds playing for the Jets, Broncos, Titans, Lions, Saints, Jaguars, Dolphins, and Vikings.ย  Despite getting opportunities from what seems like half of the teams in the NFL, Ramsey failed to make an impact anywhere he went.

Rashaun Woods (San Francisco 49ers โ€“ 2004)

In 2004, the 49ers drafted Woods as the heir to Terrell Owens, who needed to be dealt because of his unhappiness with the team.ย  The only way that Woods resembled T.O., was by wearing his number, 81.

Woods would play one healthy season with the 49ers as a rookie, compiling seven catches for 160 yards and a touchdown.ย  He spent the following season on injured reserve and was then traded to the Chargers in 2006, but he would not play in the NFL again.

Instead, he tried to play in the CFL but did so without having any success.

Marcus Nash (Denver Broncos โ€“ 1998)

After winning a Super Bowl the previous year, the Broncos looked to have an impact draft that would help them be a championship contender again.ย  Keeping that in mind, they drafted Marcus Nash, a guy who found a lot of success at the collegiate level catching passes from Peyton Manning.

However, his collegiate success did not carry over into the NFL.ย  As a rookie, Nash recorded only four receptions for 76 yards.ย  This would be his best season as a Bronco as he recorded no status the following season and was then traded.

Nash was cut from both the Dolphins and Ravens before entering the Arena Football League with the Detroit Fury.ย  In the AFL, Nash saw a lot of success for multiple teams but had his career ended neck injury during a playoff game.

Dimitrius Underwood (Minnesota Vikings โ€“ 1999)

Hereโ€™s an odd story.ย  Underwood was the 29th overall selection in 1999, what seemed like a reach by the Vikings after Underwood missed a lot of playing time as a senior at Michigan State and had rumors surrounding him that he wasnโ€™t mentally stable enough to play football professionally.

Despite the warnings, the Vikings drafted Underwood and ran into problems very early.ย  The day after signing his rookie contract, Underwood left training camp and never returned.ย  He said that playing football conflicted with his faith.

Underwood then changed his mind, coming back to the NFL and being picked up by the Dolphins off waivers.ย  He never played for the Dolphins as he was arrested for not paying child support and tried to commit suicide the following day.

In 2000, he signed a contract with the Cowboys and had his first NFL action, recording 21 tackles and four sacks in 19 games.ย  However, Underwood attempted suicide again and was released by the Cowboys.

Andy Katzenmoyer (New England Patriots โ€“ 1999)

Katzenmoyer was a highly-touted linebacker coming out of Ohio State as a Butkus Award winner, the award given to the nationโ€™s top linebacker every season.

However, the expectations dropped significantly as Katzenmoyer suffered a neck injury as a rookie that would slowly end his career.ย  In his first season, he recorded 3.5 sacks and an interception, but was never the player people thought he could be after suffering the injury.

During his second season, he was required to have surgery.ย  The following year, he left the team during training camp due to the injury and was placed on the injured reserve.ย  In 2002, Katenmoyer retired.

Rae Carruth (Carolina Panthers โ€“ 1997)

Carruth was drafted by the Panthers in 1997 as an All-American out of the University of Colorado.ย  As a rookie, he had a pretty solid year.ย  He had 44 receptions for 545 yards and four touchdowns.

His second season was cut short when he broke his foot in the Pantherโ€™s opening game.ย  It was the only game he played in that year.

In 1999, Carruthโ€™s NFL career and life took a turn for the worse.ย  The woman he was dating, who was pregnant at the time, was shot four times in a drive by.ย  Carruth would then be found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

He was immediately released by the Panthers.ย  Carruth is currently in prison and expected to be released in 2018.

Jim Druckenmiller (San Francisco 49ers โ€“ 1997)

In 1997, the 49ers decided to draft Virginia Tech product Druckenmiller over Arizona State quarterback Jake Plummer.ย  Reflecting on this move, itโ€™s safe to say the 49ers ended up with the wrong guy.

Drunkenmiller only spent two seasons with the 49ers, playing in only a handful of games while making one start.ย  His only start resulted in 15-12 victory, but Druckenmiller never proved he had the skill set to be a successful quarterback in the NFL.ย  His strong arm simply wasnโ€™t enough to overcome his accuracy problems.

The 49ers traded him to the Miami after two unimpressive seasons, but the Dolphins released him.ย  He would go on to try his luck in the AFL and XFL but was lackluster in both leagues.

Freddie Mitchell (Philadelphia Eagles โ€“ 2001)

Mitchell will remain part of Eagles history for a long time due to being on the receiving end of the epic โ€œ4th & 26โ€ play.ย  Itโ€™s unfortunate, though, because everything else he did as an Eagle was horrific.

In his four seasons with the Eagles, Mitchell recorded a whopping 90 receptions for 1,200 yards and five touchdowns.ย  It may be better than some of his other counterpart first-round receiver busts, but itโ€™s no where near the numbers the Eagles had in mind when they drafted him.

To make matters worse, the guy never shut up.ย  At some points, he was entertaining, but for the most part he was just annoying.

Todd Marinovich (Los Angeles Raiders โ€“ 1991)

Despite being born on the 4th of July, Marinovich failed to bring any fireworks to the NFL.ย  Instead, out of USC, Marionvich was nothing but a headache for the Raiders.

Most of the headaches came because Marionvich seemed to enjoy doing drugs more than he enjoyed football.ย  Actually, he allegedly liked combining the two, playing the game while he was high.

His lack of interest in the game resulted in Marionvich only spending two seasons in the NFL, which probably made his father, who bred him to be a quarterback his whole life, very unhappy.ย  He played in eight games, throwing for eight touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Marinovich can now be found making paintings, probably fueled by some psychedelics he used in the past.

23rd Overall Selection

Rashard Anderson (Carolina Panthers โ€“ 2000)

In 2000, the Panthers used the 23rd overall selection to take Anderson out of Jackson State.ย  However, Anderson ended up being one of the most disappointing cornerbacks drafted in the first round.

He was only able to play in two seasons for Carolina before being suspended by the league for violating the substance abuse policy.ย  The following year, 2003, Andersonโ€™s suspension continued as he failed to make the requirements to be reinstated.ย  After being reinstated after the 2003 season, the Panthers chose to release him.

During his time with Carolina, Anderson was only able to record one interception.

Brady Quinn (Cleveland Browns โ€“ 2007)

After Quinn shattered many records during his time at Notre Dame, the Irish quarterback was thought to be a hot prospect for teams that needed a quarterback.ย  However, Quinn fell down the draft board before the Browns finally traded up to the 22nd overall pick to take him.

As a rookie, Quinn sat behind Derek Anderson who had an unexpected Pro Bowl season.ย  However, Anderson couldnโ€™t follow it up the following season and Quinn was given his chance to start.ย  After an impressive first start, Quinn failed to play with consistency.

Quinn continued to be given opportunities in Cleveland, but he simply couldnโ€™t make the impact they were looking for and lost the starting job.

In 2010, the Browns decided to ship Quinn to Denver in a move that has worked out very well for them.ย  The Browns received Peyton Hillis in return.

Matt Jones (Jacksonville Jaguars โ€“ 2005)

After playing quarterback for Arkansas in college, Jones was drafted 21st overall by the Jaguars.ย  However, the Jaguars decided that they wanted to Jones to play as a wide receiver for them.

Jones had a combination of size and speed that garnered comparisons to Randy Moss, but Jones would never find the same kind of success.

His first two seasons were pleasantly surprising for a guy making the transition to a new position, but there were many worries about Jonesโ€™ passion for the game.ย  Things got worse for Jones as he was arrested in 2008 on possession of cocaine.

Jones would continue to have off the field issues and was finally released by the Jaguars.ย  He is now retired from the NFL.

Terry Fair (Detroit Lions โ€“ 1998)

Fair is viewed as a draft bust for a few reasons. ย First, he never turned out to be the player the Lions hoped heโ€™d be.ย ย  Second, many better players were selected after him.ย  Namely, Randy Moss who was taken with the following selection by the Vikings.

Out of the University of Tennessee, Fair only played with the Lions until 2001.ย  He would play the following season with the Panthers and then made a return in 2005 with the Rams after spending two years away from the NFL.

Fair played well as a return man with the Lions, especially in his rookie season. ย However, he never played particularly well as a corner while with the Lions.ย  During his four seasons in Detroit, he recorded just seven interceptions.

Ashley Lelie (Denver Broncos โ€“ 2002)

Although Lelie wasnโ€™t the worst player the Broncos ever drafted, the relationship between him and the team was far from what was expected.

In his first two seasons with the Broncos, he put up some decent numbers.ย  As a rookie he recorded 35 receptions for 525 yards and two touchdowns.ย  He followed it up the next season with 37 receptions for 628 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2006, Lelie became a full time starter and had the best year of his career with 54 receptions for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns.

Things got a bit strange after this as Lelie became disgruntled when the Broncos traded for Javon Walker in 2006.ย  Lelie asked to be traded after the move and skipped training camp.ย  This created a lot of negative tension between him and the team and the Broncos would go on to trade him.

Bobby Carpenter (Dallas Cowboys โ€“ 2006)

Out of Ohio State, the Cowboys used the 18th overall selection in 2006 to take Carpenter.ย  He had a pretty successful college career, earning a second-team All-Big Ten Conference award.

However, his impact for the Cowboys was far less than expected.ย  As a rookie, Carpenter played in 13 games and recorded just 19 tackles.ย  Playing in 16 games the following year, Carpenter was unable to eclipse his tackle total from the year before, registering just 18 tackles.

Mediocre play continued out of Carpenter in his third season with the Cowboys, and he seemed like a lost cause.ย  However, he had his most successful season as a Cowboy in his fourth year, playing in 16 games and recording 46 tackles and two sacks.

The biggest benefit that had for the Cowboys was boosting his trade value a bit.ย  After his fourth season in Dallas, Carpenter was traded to the Rams.

17th Overall Selection

16 of 32

Bobby Wilson (Washington Redskins โ€“ 1991)

Wilson was a guy the Redskins brought in hoping that he could be a dominant force along the defensive line.ย  Early on, it seemed like Wilson may be able to have an impact for the team, but his talents shortly fizzled out.

As a rookie, Wilson played in all 16 games, made one start, and recorded 4.5 sacks.ย ย  Things would go downhill from here as over the next three seasons, Wilson never played in more than 12 games per season.ย

In Wilsonโ€™s last year with the Redskins, he started all nine games that he played in.ย  However, he suffered a back injury that season that would end his lackluster career in Washington.

As a note, Brett Favre would be taken in the second round of the 1991 draft.

Dan McGwire (Seattle Seahawks โ€“ 1991)

In 1991, the Seahawks used the 16th overall pick to draft the tallest quarterback the league has ever seen.ย  The pick was thought of by many to be a reach, and the Seahawks quickly found out that McGwireโ€™s large size didnโ€™t translate into large talent.

During his four seasons in Seattle, McGwire typically served a backup role but weaseled his way into the starting lineup a few times, mostly because of other quarterbacks being injured.

His career numbers are far from impressive as he completed 50% of his passes and tallied a total of just two touchdowns while throwing for six interceptions.

Jerome McDougle (Philadelphia Eagles โ€“ 2003)

In 2003, the Eagles selected McDougle out of the University of Miami, where he contributed to a defense that won a National Championship in 2001.ย  However, his contributions to the Eagles defense would be almost non-existent.

As an Eagles fan myself, I had high hopes for McDougle, but the kid simply couldnโ€™t catch a break.ย  He suffered a long list of different injuries that kept him off the field, including being shot in 2005 right before the start of training camp.

Outside of being shot, he suffered many more injuries on the field.ย  These injuries are what led to his underwhelming career numbers with the Eagles, recording a total of three sacks in five seasons.

Jason Peter (Carolina Panthers โ€“ 1998)

Peter was drafted out of Nebraska as an All-American and looked like one of those players who should be able to make an immediate impact for their team.ย  As a rookie, Peter got his opportunity to shine as he started in 11 games.ย  However, opportunity was never grasped.

In his next three seasons in Carolina, Peter would only play in a total of 24 games.ย  He was often injured, and by the time he was in his third season, never cracked the starting lineup again.

His injury status may have been what led him to his addiction to painkillers, which he admitted to in a book he would publish after leaving football.ย  Peter also admits that he was addicted to other substances including heroin, cocaine, and alcohol.

Eugene Chung (New England Patriots โ€“ 1992)

Out of Virginia Tech, Chung became the first Korean American to be drafted in the first round.ย  However, his first round status never really panned out.

As a rookie, Chung played at both right tackle and right guard for the Patriots, starting in 14 games.ย  The following season, he was moved to left guard and started in all 16 games.ย  This trend didnโ€™t last long as he was replaced by Bob Kratch the following season and only appeared in three games.

The Patriots parted ways with Chung after the 1994 season and he was picked up by the Jaguars, but never started a game there.ย  He would go on to play for the Colts in 1997, again making no starts, before he finally exited the NFL.

Wendell Bryant (Arizona Cardinals - 2002)

At Wisconsin, Bryant was a talented player in the middle of the line, winning the Big 10 Defensive Lineman of the Year award as both a junior and senior.

When he made it into the NFL, Bryant ended up recording 1.5 sacks in his career, spending the entire 2005 season out of the lineup do to a suspension for violating the leagueโ€™s substance abuse policy for the third time.

Bryant was drafted by the Las Vegas Locomotives, a UFL team, in 2009.ย  He spent the season on IR and is now on the Omaha Nighthawks roster, another UFL team.

Ron Dayne (New York Giants โ€“ 2000)

If you remember Dayneโ€™s days at the University of Wisconsin, you should remember watching an absolute bull of a running back.ย  He was a four year starter and never rushed for less than 1,300 yards in a single season.ย  However, that was a number heโ€™d never get close to in the NFL.

The Giants drafted him in 2000 with the 11th overall selection, and it was a guy many people were excited to watch after such a dominant college career.

He created a tandem in the backfield with Tiki Barber that was known as โ€œThunder and Lightning.โ€ย  However, Dayne never brought the thunder to the backfield that the Giants expected and he began to be featured less and less in the Giants backfield.

Dayne did not play in the 2003 season and only received 52 carries in 2004.ย  When his contract expired at the end of the season, the Giants chose not to bring him back.

Dayne went on to play for the Broncos and showed some potential with the Texans, but never lived up to be the running back everyone thought he could be.

Travis Taylor (Baltimore Ravens - 2000)

Taylor was selected by the Ravens with high hopes that he would be able to come in and immediately contribute.ย  It seemed like he might after scoring twice in only his second NFL game.

However, Taylor would go on to record only 28 catches for 278 yards in his first season.

His best season came in 2002 where he recorded 61 catches for 869 yards and six touchdowns, but he failed to play with any level of consistency.

Taylor was released by the Ravens in 2004.

Reggie Williams (Jacksonville Jaguars โ€“ 2004)

After being the third wide receiver selected in the top 10 of the 2004 NFL Draft, the Jaguars had high hopes for Williams.ย  Like everyone on this list, Williams failed to live up to expectations.

Williams started all but one game as a rookie, but did not put up the numbers you would expect from a starting receiver.ย  He recorded just 27 receptions for 268 yards and a single touchdown.

His mediocre numbers went on for two more seasons before he finally made his mark in 2007 with career highs in yards (629) and touchdowns (10).ย  However, his numbers would fall back off in 2008 and he was finally released.

After being released, he was arrested outside of a nightclub and charged with possession of cocaine.ย  He hasnโ€™t played a game in the NFL since.

Tim Biakabutuka โ€“ (Carolina Panthers - 1996)

Biakabutuka was a star at the University of Michigan where he still holds the record for rushing yards in a single season and also holds the second-highest single game total.

Despite having such high expectations, Biakabutuka failed to stay healthy for most of his career and never played more than 12 games in a single season.ย  His most successful season came in 1999 where he rushed for 718 yards and six touchdowns.

The Panthers passed on Eddie George in order to draft Biakabutuka.

Mike Mamula (Philadelphia Eagles โ€“ 1995)

Mamula was a defensive end out of Boston College who helped his draft stock out big time after an impressive workout at the NFL Combine.ย  The Eagles were the lucky team who bought into the performance and traded up to get Mamula with the 7th overall selection.

Mamula started 13 games as a rookie but only recorded 5.5 sacks.ย  He would go on to start all 16 games in both of his next two seasons but only combined for 12 sacks in the 32 contests.

After missing the 1998 season due to an injury in the preseason, Mamula returned to the Eagles in 1999 and recorded his highest single season sack total with 8.5 sacks.

His final stint with the Eagles in 2000 would be a disappointing year, basically summarizing his career.ย  Mamula started six of the 15 games he played on and recorded just 5.5 sacks.

Adam Jones (Tennessee Titans โ€“ 2005)

Pacman.ย  Could he have been a good player if he would have been able to focus and stay out of trouble?ย  Weโ€™ll never know.

Jones was taken with the 6th overall pick in the 2005 after showing great athleticism at West Virginia.ย  He played corner, but also proved to be a very talented return man.

His talents never really shown through in the NFL as he was busier taking dumb penalties on the field and acting even more stupid off of it.ย  It seemed like the guy was suspended his whole career, probably because he almost was.

After being drafted so high by the Titans, Jones was only able to record four interceptions in his two seasons in Tennessee.

Curtis Enis (Chicago Bears โ€“ 1998)

With an opening at the running back position in 1998, the Bears attempted to fill the void by taking Enis with the 5th overall selection.ย  At the time, it didnโ€™t seem like too bad of a decision as Enis was coming off two solid seasons at Penn State.

This didnโ€™t turn out to be very true.ย  As a rookie, Enis started one game, appearing in nine total.ย  He ran the ball a total of 133 times for 497 yards and failed to find the end zone.

Things got better for Enis the following season, as he started 12 games.ย  He had 287 carries for 916 yards and three touchdowns.ย  He also caught 45 passes for 340 yards and added two more touchdowns.

However, in 2002, Enis had a huge dropoff in production.ย  He had just 36 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown while being hampered by a knee injury.ย  This was his last season as he retired from the NFL at the age of 24.

ORCHARD PARK, NY - AUGUST 9: Tackle Mike Williams #68 of the Buffalo Bills jogs on the field during the NFL preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals on August 9, 2002 at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. The Bengals defeated the Bills 24-17

Mike Williams (Buffalo Bills - 2002)

Williams was a highly coveted offensive tackle prospect entering the 2002 NFL Draft, and was the first offensive lineman taken, three picks ahead of Bryant McKinnie.

Williams first began as a right tackle but was moved over to the left side during his first season.ย  This didnโ€™t work out very well and Williams was replaced by soon to be Pro Bowl tackle, Jason Peters.

The Bills attempted to move Williams inside to play guard, but those attempts failed.ย  He was released in 2006.

Akili Smith (Cincinnati Bengals - 1999)

I donโ€™t think many Bengals fans will disagree with this one.ย  Smith was taken with the third overall pick and was supposed to be the new face of the franchise in Cincinnati.ย

To say Smith disappointed is an understatement. His career with the Bengals had him playing in 22 games, throwing for five touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

After spending three seasons with the Bengals and not living up to anyoneโ€™s expectations, Smith was released by the team in 2002.

He ended up in Green Bay and Tampa Bay before leaving the NFL to play a season in NFL Europe and a season in the CFL.

Ryan Leaf (San Diego Chargers โ€“ 1998)

Leaf is one of the most famous draft busts of all-time, probably not what the Chargers had in mind when they drafted him with the 2nd overall selection in 1998.

Leaf was a dominant college player at Washington State, being named an All-American and coming third in Heisman Trophy voting to Charles Woodson and Peyton Manning.

While in San Diego, Leaf started a total of 18 games.ย  Kind of seems like a lot of games to figure out just how bad he was, but I guess the Chargers were hoping the high draft selection could turn things around.

He never did as his career numbers as a Charger were awful, to put it nicely.ย  During his time in San Diego, he completed 48 percent of his passes, throwing 13 touchdowns and 33 interceptions.

After leaving the Chargers, he would spend one year with the Cowboys before exiting the NFL.

JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders โ€“ 2007)

Letโ€™s give Tim Couch a break.ย  Russell came into the 2007 draft with Brady Quinn as the highest rated quarterbacks in their class.ย  Al Davis and company decided to go with the Russellโ€™s strong arm instead of Quinnโ€™s good looks.

To make sure things got off to a good start, Russell held out of training camp and the first week of the regular season until he got a contract he was happy with, but not deserving of.

Coming in so late put a damper on his rookie season, but he appeared in four games as a rookie.ย  Those games gave us a preview of what was to come as he completed 54.5 percent of his passes while throwing for two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Russell was given the opportunity to be the starter for the Raiders in 2008, but he failed to put anything overly impressive together.

The 2009 season was more of the same, and the Raiders ended up releasing him.
