NCAA Final Four: The Most Memorable Final Four Moments Since 1975

Nicholas GossApr 4, 2011

The Butler Bulldogs and the UConn Huskies will battle for the 2011 Men's NCAA Basketball Championship tonight in Houston, with one of them capping off an improbable run to the summit of the college basketball world.

Last season Butler almost beat Duke on a potential buzzer-beater from half-court, but the Bulldogs have stormed back to the final and look to finish the job this season.

UConn and its star, Kemba Walker, will look to deliver coach Jim Calhoun his third national title at the university.

We are sure to see a great game tonight, so let's take a look at the 10 best moments in Final Four history.

Will tonight's game have a moment that will be in next year's version of this list?

Honorable Mention: Laettner's Miracle Shot over Kentucky in the 1992 Elite Eight

1 of 10

This moment didn't occur in the Final Four, but it sent Duke to the Final Four and it's too good not to include.

If you love college basketball, you've probably seen this highlight a thousand times.

Trailing 103-102 in overtime vs. Kentucky with 2.1 seconds remaining, Grant Hill fired a full-court pass from his own baseline to Christian Laettner, who fired a shot that gave Duke a berth in the 1992 Final Four.

Duke defeated Indiana in the semifinals and Michigan, which was in year one of the two-year "Fab Five" era, in the finals.

Even as a person who does not like Duke, there's no question this moment is one of the finest in basketball history.

Mario Chalmers Forces Overtime vs. Memphis in 2008 Final

2 of 10

Kansas capped a nine-point comeback to force overtime with Mario Chalmers' three-point shot with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation.

Chalmers and Kansas would go onto defeat Derrick Rose and Memphis in overtime to capture the national championship.

This was one of the most exciting title games in recent memory.

Keith Smart's Shot Wins the 1987 Title for Indiana over Syracuse

3 of 10

Bob Knight's final championship was won by Keith Smart in the closing moments of the 1987 final against Syracuse.

This is Smart's shining moment in his basketball career, which was followed by a very brief NBA career.

This game was the last championship Indiana has won. The Hoosiers reached the final in 2002 as a 5-seed but lost to Maryland.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was devastated after this loss, but finally got his championship when Carmelo Anthony helped lead him and the Orange to the 2003 title over Kansas.

Chris Webber's Timeout Costs Michigan a Chance at the 1993 Title vs. UNC

8 of 10

Chris Webber's basketball career will best be remembered for his biggest mistake, calling a timeout in the closing moments of the 1993 final against North Carolina when Michigan didn't have any timeouts left.

Webber's blunder resulted in a technical foul and cost Michigan the game.

To this day, Webber refuses to talk about the incident, which ultimately will be the highlight of his career, fair or not.
