Brandon Knight Video: Watch Freshman Phenom Send Kentucky to the Elite 8

Ryan BraunMar 26, 2011

Brandon Knight, you’re developing something of a reputation.

Three NCAA tournament games for the freshman have now ended twice with game-winners and once with him setting a career-high 30 points in a blowout victory.

This one in particular was a tough, tough shot—a 15-footer with Aaron Craft draped all over him.

“That’s the best team we’ve played all year,” said a conciliatory Thad Matta.

I think he’s right.

By way of Kentucky’s pressure defense, Ohio State shot just 32 percent from the floor and made only six 3-pointers after racking up 28 over the course of the first two rounds.

The game was close at the end because the Buckeyes weren’t the only ones struggling.

As he had in the Princeton game, Knight was having a rough go of it from the field prior to the last seven seconds—he’d missed seven of his nine shots before attempting the game-winner.

I think the rule of thumb should be this: If Brandon Knight has been struggling all game, do not let him take the final shot.

Fool me once…shame on you.

Fool me twice…you must be Brandon Knight in an NCAA tournament basketball game.

Making things even more painful for Ohio State, just 16 seconds prior Knight’s game-winner Jon Diebler hit what perhaps could have been the biggest shot of the tournament—a game-tying three from four feet beyond the line.

Now that’s washed away.

The only silver lining for the Buckeyes—this loss, at least initially, seems to have inspired Jared Sullinger to return for another season.

“I didn’t like the taste of losing,” he said.

Nor does anyone at Ohio State. Nor does anyone at Princeton. Two schools I can pretty safely assume Brandon Knight won’t be getting honorary degrees from.

If he keeps playing like he has been, he may not be getting one from Kentucky either.
