March Madness 2011 Predictions: 10 Bold Predictions for the Sweet 16
Did anyone have Richmond, Butler and VCU in their Sweet 16?
Thought not...
The first weekend of the Madness is in the books, and it was just that—absolutely insane.
After a plethora of buzzer-beaters, transcendent performances and tough defense, the field, which was 68 five days ago, is down to the Sweet 16.
What's in store for next week?
Can Derrick Williams carry Arizona past Duke and its sensational guards?
Will Billy Donovan and the Gators get "Jimmered"?
Can Butler continue yet another improbable run to the Final Four?
Is it Thursday yet?
Read on for your Sweet 16 predictions...
(By the way, does anyone have a better head of hair in the tourney than Wisconsin's Mike Bruesewitz?)
10. Bo Ryan Scares Everyone
1 of 10
Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bo Ryan is a scary guy.
Ask any referee he has yelled at.
When the Badgers take on Butler in their next contest, expect Ryan's face to be enough to make a grown man cry when Matt Howard flops and draws a foul.
9. Morris Twins Score Big
2 of 10
Marcus and Markieff Morris are poetry in motion when they play together on the basketball court.
They combined for 41 points and 24 rebounds in KU's thrashing of Illinois.
Richmond is going to have a very difficult time matching up with these two, and they will again reach the 40-point mark.
8. Arizona Scares Duke
3 of 10
Arizona squeaked past Texas.
Duke struggled with Michigan's athletic play and perimeter defense at times but eked out the victory.
Expect an overtime victory for the Blue Devils in this one.
7. Buckeyes Roll
4 of 10
The Buckeyes dismantled George Mason, and Kentucky is next in their path.
The overall No. 1 seed has been impressive and will continue to be, stifling the Wildcats with its defense and shooting the ball extremely well.
Brandon Knight will have another great game, but it will not be enough, as UK falls to the Buckeyes by double-digits.
6. Kawhi Leonard Falls Short
5 of 10
While San Diego State has had a great season and looked good in its first two games, the run ends here.
UConn will be one of only two Big East Teams remaining in the tourney, and its experience and talent will be too much for SDSU.
Kawhi Leonard will have a big game against the Huskies but will not be enough by himself to pull the Aztecs past Jim Calhoun's squad.
5. Taylor Recovers
6 of 10
Wisconsin guard Jordan Taylor struggled offensively against K-State, hitting only two field goals the entire night.
This should make Butler a little nervous, as Taylor is liable to shake off his shooting funk and make the Bulldogs pay.
Butler's perimeter defense is stout, but it won't be enough to slow down Taylor in this one.
4. Kemba Walker Game-Winner
7 of 10
Kemba Walker is the best guard in college basketball.
He will prove it against San Diego State.
The Aztecs have yet to see a guard with Walker's tremendous athletic ability who keeps his head up and distributes the ball well.
While the Aztecs will hang around until the end, Kemba will drain a buzzer-beater to win.
3. Cinderella Is Not Done Dancing
8 of 10
VCU, Richmond and Marquette—well done.
Butler, you have been here before.
Florida State—incredible.
Now, who will continue on?
Marquette matches up well with UNC, while VCU vs. Florida State should be very entertaining.
VCU and Marquette will move on to the Elite Eight...
2. Jimmer Not Enough
9 of 10
Jimmer Fredette has been tremendous all season long and is a consummate scorer.
However, as we saw in the Kansas State-Wisconsin matchup on Saturday, one star does not guarantee success at this point in the tournament.
Fredette will score his points, but Florida will prove to be the better team, as Erving Walker scores 20 in a victory for the Gators.
1. Marquette Takes Down UNC
10 of 10
UNC played a pretty solid game in eliminating the Washington Huskies on Sunday, but let's face it—UW found ways to beat itself at the end.
While Marquette is a double-digit seed, it has the athleticism and defensive ability to take out the Tar Heels.
Marquette is a tough, physical team, and UNC will struggle the entire game to score, culminating in a three-point loss for the Heels.
