NCAA Tournament 2011: 10 Guys Who Hurt Their NBA Stock After Round One
Every once in a while an unexpected team makes a run at the National Championship and a formerly unknown player gets the attention of both hoop fans and NBA scouts.
Last year it was Gordon Hayward with Butler. A few years before that it was Mike Miller with Florida.
But sometimes the NCAA Tournament does just the opposite and guys who were high on the draft board drop after a disappointing performance.
After an exciting first round of dancing, full of upsets and buzzer beaters, here are 10 players who's stock has dropped after the first round.
Tu Holloway
1 of 10
I liked this Xavier team and I thought they had a real chance to make some noise in the tourney because of their guards Mark Lyons and Tu Holloway.
Unfortunately though, Xavier got crushed by Marquette.
Holloway was one of the best scoring guards in the country all year, averaging over 20 points per game.
He's only a junior so there was no guarantee he would have gone pro anyway but after the loss to Marquette it's pretty clear he should stay another year.
Holloway was shut down by the Golden Eagles, scoring only five points off of one for eight shooting from the field.
Nikola Vucevic
2 of 10
Nikola Vucevic is 6'10'', with a great shooting stroke for such a big player.
He is an excellent scorer and is strong on the boards.
But after USC's first round loss to VCU, it looked as though Vucevic was, all along, a big fish in a very weak conference.
He scored 11 points, six below his average, but what was bad was how he looked.
Vucevic looked stiff and soft. Nothing like the dominant player his numbers suggest.
John Jenkins
3 of 10
Sophomore scoring machine John Jenkins payed well in Vanderbilt's first round loss to Richmond.
Jenkins scored 21 points.
But he disappeared down the stretch when he had to step up.
Still a young player, Jenkins should return to Vanderbilt and learn to be a team leader before testing the NBA.
Steven Gray
4 of 10
Steven Gray played very well against St. John's in the first round, and Gonzaga was able to pull off a big upset.
I've seen a lot of Steven Gray this year. He is a big guard, a strong guard, has good mechanics on his jump shot, and excellent ball control.
I'm just not convinced he likes playing basketball very much.
Gray appears to take plays off and does not like to take the game over on offense. Furthermore, with his size and athleticism he should be a lock down defender.
I'm no NBA scout, but I need to see Gray make a statement against BYU before I'm convinced on his NBA potential or even NBA interest.
Brandon Knight
5 of 10
Brandon Knight is a young player, only a freshman, with skill well beyond his years.
With that said, he should stay in school another year.
Omar Cook was a fab freshman too, leading the Big East in assists in his one year at St.John's. He left school early and is now playing in Europe.
Brandon Knight had only two points in the win against Princeton, they came off the game winning layup.
That shows Knight has tremendous potential, but Knight should spend another year or two with Kentucky and go into the NBA ready to dominate.
Austin Freeman
6 of 10
Austin Freeman, senior guard and leading scorer for Georgetown this year will be in the NBA Draft this summer.
Unfortunately, he's final game as a Hoya was a disaster.
Freeman shot three of fourteen from the field and scored 10 points. He was averaging 17.
If Freeman was shut down by VCU, NBA scouts have to wonder how the strong, if undersized two guard will score against NBA defenders.
Corey Stokes
7 of 10
Corey Stokes is an NBA shooter, without a doubt.
But the 6'5" guard may be a bit one dimensional.
In Villanova's loss to George Mason Stokes took 14 shots, 10 of which were three pointers.
Stokes can be a streaky shooter and if he is not making shots, what does he do?
Corey Fisher
8 of 10
Corey Fisher, the Wildcats senior guard from the Bronx, scored 20 points in the loss to George Mason.
But in the second half of that game Fisher went cold.
The six foot guard looked overwhelmed by the size of George Mason.
As a score first point guard, Fisher needed to show scouts he could do it when it counted.
Khris Middleton
9 of 10
Khris Middleton was Texas A&M's leading scorer all year.
The sophomore guard has great NBA potential. At 6'7", he reminds me of a poor man's Kevin Durant.
But if Middleton can take any thing away from the Aggies first round loss to Florida State, it should be stay in school.
Middleton played well in the first half, but had only two points in the second, and that basket came over 15 minutes in.
Middleton should go back to school, work on his jump shot and build the confidence needed to dominate.
Scotty Hopson
10 of 10
Scotty Hopson, junior guard at Tennessee, rocks the old school Fresh Prince fade, so at least his hair looked good when the Volunteers took a beating from Michigan in the first round.
Hopson averaged 17 points per game for the year, but in the loss Hopson only scored four points.
Hopson is an NBA player, but after such a poor performance, his stock may be dropping.
