2011 NCAA Tournament: Previewing the Key Afternoon and Evening Matchups of Day 2

Matt FaulconerMar 18, 2011

The first day of the NCAA Tournament did not disappoint with a buzzer beating victory by Butler, and a late three from Morehead State.

The second day of the Tournament should not disappoint either with these upcoming matchups, including a game between Memphis vs. Arizona and Marquette vs. Xavier.

If you're a college basketball fan, order a pizza, gather your friends and sit back and enjoy these upcoming games.

Arizona (5) vs Memphis (12)

Arizona has been a trendy team for much of the season after a very hot start to their season.  However, as of late, they have not been playing as well.

Arizona is only 4-3 over their last seven games and looked very vulnerable in their loss at UCLA, losing by 22 and only scoring 49 points.

Outside of Derrick Williams, they do not have a single player that averages double digit points on the season.

Memphis, like Arizona, only has one player averaging double digit points and relies on a team effort to get the job done.  Memphis will have to rely heavily on a strong defensive effort against Derrick Williams, if they want to win this game.

Texas A&M (7) vs Florida State (10)

The ACC only got four teams into the tournament this year, and one of them, Clemson, was already eliminated.  Florida State will be looking to represent the ACC by winning the conferences first game when they tip off against Texas A&M.

Texas A&M is one of the worst scoring teams in the country, only averaging 68.9 points per game, ranking 170th in the country.

With that being said, Florida State is not much better, only averaging 69.3 points per game, good for 154th in the country.

This game is going to be a grinder.  Don't expect either team to get up and down the court. It is going to be a slow-paced game, just like the Old Dominion, Butler matchup.

Offensively, this game is going to come down to Khris Middleton vs Chris Singleton.  May the best player win.

Xavier (6) vs Marquette (11)

Xavier has been very good since the end of January, including a 23 point victory over Richmond during that stretch.

Marquette was absolutely destroyed in their last outing by Louisville and have been up and down all season long.

Both teams are solid offensive and defensive teams and both will be looking to play a faster tempo.  Tu Holloway is the featured player in this game and will be looking to showcase his scoring abilities by getting up and down the court.

Holloway is an excellent shooter and does a good job penetrating and finding open players.

This game could come down to the last few possessions and a Holloway drive for the win.

A battle between Georgia and Washington will be a matchup of complete opposites.  Georgia is one of the slowest paced teams in the country and will be looking to keep Washington in a half court offense.  Washington, on the other hand, will be looking to run up and down the floor as they are the third highest scoring team in the country.

Isaiah Thomas and Matthew Bryan-Amaning will be looking to carry Washington into a matchup against North Carolina on Sunday.

However, if Georgia is able to slow the pace and play the game at their tempo, Georgia may be able to shock the Huskies.

Georgetown (6) vs Virginia Commonwealth University (11)

VCU was one of the teams that no one expected to be in the Tournament field, however they snuck into the play in game and defeated USC to get the chance to face off against the Hoyas.

Georgetown struggled down the stretch and will be looking for Austin Freeman to break them out of their slump.

VCU ended George Mason's winning streak during the CAA Tournament and eventually lost to Old Dominion in the CAA Championship.

Neither team is a fast-paced team and will be looking to win the game of the defensive side of the ball.  If VCU can contain Freeman and shoot the ball well, the Hoyas may be on upset alert.
