2011 NCAA Tournament: 5 Biggest Surprises Left for March Madness
With March Madness underway, we have already seen two of the top teams in the Big East, Louisville and St. John's, already sent home.
Louisville was knocked out in dramatic fashion with a late three-pointer from Morehead State, while St. John's was run out of the gym by Gonzaga.
Don't expect the upsets to stop with Morehead State, as there are plenty more to come.
Here are five more surprises that could happen in the next few weeks...
Kansas State Will Defeat Pittsburgh
1 of 5
Kansas State got all they could handle from a very good Utah State team that only lost three games in the regular season.
Kansas State was a Top Five team in the country in the preseason and have been playing better as of late.
Since the start of February, the Wildcats have only lost to two games, both to Colorado. During that stretch they beat Kansas at home and went on the road to defeat Texas.
Next up for the Wildcats are the Wisconsin Badgers. Kansas State will look to get by Wisconsin with their speed and use the same strategy to defeat Pittsburgh.
Jacob Pullen should be able to have his way with both teams by getting to the rim and free-throw line.
Both Wisconsin and Pittsburgh are physical teams, and those types of teams generally struggle in the Tournament, when officials attempt to control more games.
If Kansas State can use their speed to get these teams in foul trouble, they could see themselves facing rival Kansas in the Final Four.
Gonzaga Will Defeat BYU
2 of 5
Brigham Young and Jimmer Fredette have had an improbable season to this point. Since losing Brandon Davies, Fredette has taken the team on his shoulders and carried them single-handedly.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, they run into the Bulldogs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Gonzaga is one of the hottest teams in the country right now and have a more well-rounded team than BYU.
Mark Few is one of the best coaches in the country and will look to lock down Jimmer Fredette early and often. Marquise Carter had his way with St. Johns by scoring 25 points and will look to do the same against Fredette.
Carter has been a late bloomer for the Bulldogs, and if he can post solid numbers again, Gonzaga will walk off the court headed to another Sweet 16.
None of the Top 4 Seeds in the Southeast Will Reach the Elite 8
3 of 5
The Southeast may very well feature a matchup of the fifth seed and the 11th seed in the regional final.
Pittsburgh is likely the most vulnerable No. 1 seed, and Florida is a very vulnerable No. 2 seed. Florida was hot near the end of the season, but the SEC was down this season. That was proven when Vanderbilt lost to Richmond and Kentucky needed a late spurt to get by Princeton.
Gonzaga is a very good No. 11 seed that could very well be playing for a chance to go to the Final Four against Kansas State.
While it is very rare that all of the Top Four seeds in a region are eliminated in the first three rounds of the tournament, it may very well happen this year in the Southeast.
George Mason Will Give Ohio State a Scare
4 of 5
Ohio State should make the Final Four and shouldn't face much resistance until their Elite Eight matchup against either Syracuse or North Carolina.
However, George Mason will defeat Villanova and set up a matchup with Ohio State.
Ohio State will likely be looking ahead to a matchup against Kentucky or West Virginia, but George Mason will bring the house at the Buckeyes.
Will George Mason win? Probably not. However, the people who have Ohio State winning the NCAA Tournament in their bracket will likely find themselves on the edge of their couch and biting their nails during the final minutes.
No Big East Team Will Make the Final Four
5 of 5
The Big East will continue their National Championship drought and lose all of their teams before the Final Four.
Morehead State showed that the Big East was not as powerful as they thought they were when they knocked off Louisville.
Pittsburgh should not have received a No. 1 seed over Notre Dame, and Notre Dame was put into a tough situation having to face off against Kansas in the Elite Eight.
Unfortunately for the Big East, they will watch their last two teams fall in the Elite Eight, when Duke knocks off the Connecticut Huskies and Kansas knocks off the Fighting Irish.
