NCAA Bracket 2011: 5 Seeds the Committee Got Wrong

Chris CarsonMar 14, 2011

Every year it's seems as though the selection committee makes a few glowing errors, either leaving teams out (call me a sucker for the WCC, but I thought for sure Saint Mary's would get an at-large bid) or seeding teams in the wrong spot.

This article will attempt to look at five misplaced seeds and suggest ways in which they could be improved.

In other words, who should be higher, who should be lower and who shouldn't be in at all.

This is the kind of subject that everyone has an opinion about, so I would love to hear yours.

But let me begin.

The first team that jumps out to me is Tennessee. It's not a matter of who they beat but who they lost to, which seems to be everyone.

The Volunteers were 8-8 in the SEC, not exactly the most powerful conference. They lost to Oakland early in the season and almost everyone else they played except for Vanderbilt late in the season.

They played good teams, but other than beating Pittsburgh in December, the Vols have not beaten anybody.

I'm not sure how Tennessee got an at-large bid at 19-14 and I really don't know how they got a No. 8 seed.

I think they should be lower or not in at all. What do you think?

In the same bracket, I would have thought UConn a No. 2 seed.

I guess I put a lot of value in the Big East tournament, but considering how strong the conference is this year, making it to the Final Four may end up being easier for the Huskies than winning in Madison Square Garden.

The Huskies have proven they are the best team in far and away the best conference. I thought they would be a two.

I thought BYU would be a No. 2 seed as well.

Maybe Jimmer fever has gotten the best of me, but the Cougars beat Arizona, San Diego State twice, Saint Mary's and UNLV twice. The Mountain West is considered a mid-major conference, but this year I'd say it was stronger than the SEC.

So I would have put BYU to a No. 2 seed and dropped Florida lower.

The Gators only quality wins came against other SEC teams. But their losses came from teams like Jacksonville and Central Florida and South Carolina.

The committee gave the SEC a lot of respect this year. You would think that beating San Diego State twice would be worth more than beating Vanderbilt.

But the NCAA tournament is a great time to debate the qualities of every team in the field of now 68.

These are just my thoughts. Saint Mary's in, Tennessee lower or out altogether, UConn a two, BYU a two and Florida lower.

What do you think?
