NCAA Bracket 2011: Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Alabama Get Screwed by the NCAA
68 seeds with 31 automatic qualifiers; there's always going to be some teams that feel they got screwed.
Some of these snubs go both ways.
Marquette and Missouri both have a right to feel screwed over.
This year is the inaugural year of the First 4 which is what the NCAA is calling the four play-in games.
All games will nationally televised live this year on CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV.
Here's a look at who feels like they got screwed by the NCAA. I've included each team's Sagarin rating which is a better predictor of tournament success than RPI.
Kentucky Wildcats (25-8)
1 of 12
Sagarin Rating: No. 12
NCAA first round game: 4 Kentucky vs 13 Princeton
This is an instance where the committee did not take into consideration a team's conference tournament success. There were other instances where they took a teams failure into consideration it seemed. That's what seemed inconsistent to me about the NCAA selection committee.
Kentucky wins the SEC Tournament by beating Florida and the Gators get a No. 2 seed. Kentucky was hoping for a No. 3 seed.
They might have a tough matchup with No. 5 seed West Virginia (Sagarin rating: 19) in the second round.
Washington Huskies (23-10)
2 of 12
Sagarin Rating: No. 26
NCAA first round game: 7 Washington vs 10 Georgia
This is a case where I think Washington gets screwed because Georgia (Sagarin rating: No. 52) gets a much higher seed than they deserve.
Georgia should be a No.12 or 13 seed playing West Virginia or Kentucky. Instead they get a much easier road to an upset.
I think Washington gets screwed because Georgia shouldn't be in that seeding and it's a losable game for Washington.
Connecticut Huskies (26-9)
3 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 14
NCAA first round game: 3 UConn vs 14 Bucknell
UConn, like Kentucky, was hoping for their conference tournament success to be taken more into account by the selection committee.
I don't think they got screwed but they wanted to get a No. 2 seed.
They might have to go through Cincinnati (Sagarin rating: No. 17), San Diego State (No. 4), and Duke (No. 3) to get to the Final Four.
Cincinnati Bearcats (25-8)
4 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 17
NCAA first round game: 6 Cincinnati vs 11 Missouri
They came into the Big East Tournament feeling like the most disrespected team in the country and they head into the NCAA Tournament feeling the same way. It seems the committee must have taken their conference tournament play into consideration.
Even with their early exit in the Big East Tournament, they should be a No. 4 or 5 seed. On top of that, the Bearcats get a tough draw as a No. 6 having to play Missouri. This is a game in which neither team is that familiar with each other and could easily be a toss up.
It's time for Cincinnati to step up. They feel they got screwed and rightly so, I think. They didn't do anything in the Big East Tournament and now it's time to make people respect you.
If they get through Missouri (Sagarin rating: No. 28), they'll play UConn (No. 14) who was the team that knocked them out of the Big East Tournament. Time to earn some respect.
Marquette Golden Eagles (20-14)
5 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 29
NCAA first round game: 6 Xavier vs 11 Marquette
Marquette should be No. 7 or 8 seed. I knew they wouldn't get seeded that high but I still thought they would make noise in the tournament as a No. 9 or 10 seed. Not only did they get screwed by seeding, they also get screwed by the draw. Xavier (Sagarin rating: No. 35) is a tough team.
Now, I don't see Marquette making much noise in the tourney.
They would have to play Syracuse (No. 10) in the next round if they did upset Xavier.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (26-6)
6 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 8
NCAA first round game: 2 Notre Dame vs 15 Akron
The Irish are probably about where they're supposed to be as far as seeding but they were expecting a No. 1 seed and the Big East was expecting to have more than just one No. 1 seed.
So they feel like they got screwed.
Now they have to go through Kansas (Sagarin rating: No. 2) to get to the Final Four.
Vanderbilt Commodores (23-10)
7 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 30
NCAA first round game: 5 Vanderbilt vs 12 Richmond
Vanderbilt is seeded about where they should be but Richmond (Sagarin rating: No. 36) should be at least a No. 10 seed and maybe even a No. 9 seed.
Vanderbilt should be getting rewarded for their season. I think it hurts more for the team in Vanderbilt's situation in a scenario like this. They have the higher seed and should be playing a real No. 12 seed.
Alabama Crimson Tide (21-11)
8 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 60
Left out of the tournament.
Alabama is left sitting on the sidelines looking at Georgia (Sagarin rating: 52) who they beat in the SEC Tournament.
They thought that game would be an NCAA Tournament playoff game.
It wasn't.
Play in Games
9 of 12
Clemson (Sagarin rating: No. 42) vs UAB (Sagarin rating: No. 53) playing for a No. 12 seed. Clemson gets screwed on that deal
USC (Sagarin rating: No. 62) vs VCU (Sagarin rating: No. 77) for a No. 11 seed. I think America gets screwed in this one.
I think the fans get the worst end of the deal with play-in games.
It's two teams playing for a seed they don't deserve.
If the NCAA has their way, there will be an entire first round of 16 play-in games in the near future.
Duke (30-4)
10 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 3
NCAA first round game: 1 Duke vs 16 Hampton
How can a No. 1 seed get screwed?
It's all about location.
Instead of a No. 2 seed in the Southeast or East regional, they get the No. 1 seed in Anaheim, CA.
It's kind of like when your grandma is trying to give you money or something out of her pantry and you don't want to accept it but you don't want to be rude either.
New Mexico (20-12)
11 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 48
Left out of the tournament.
I'll mention Colorado (Sagarin rating: 49) too.
Both teams had big wins against teams in the tournament.
Virginia Tech (21-11)
12 of 12
Sagarin rating: No. 40
Left out of the tournament.
According to the Sagarin rating, there are at least 28 teams that either qualified or were selected to the tournament that were worse than Virginia Tech.
They couldn't even get one of those crappy play-in games.
