Golden State Warriors: Should They Completely Overhaul This Summer?

James PearsonMar 9, 2011

If there is one thing you gain by being a Golden State Warrior fan, it’s patience.

It’s a great trait to have and since we are all patient, we can all wait to see where this main core of Warriors players can take us.

What do we have to lose? It’s not like if we trade everyone it means they are going to starting winning more instantly.

How many times have we traded away players only to have them flourish elsewhere? Too many to count.

That’s why I say they shouldn’t completely overhaul this roster.

Call me crazy (being a Warriors fan you’d have to be a little, right?), but I’m excited that with a couple changes this team can be playoff regulars for the next few years. The Memphis Grizzles are looking like a playoff team, so why not the Warriors?

This season, as I said before, is all but over; that’s nothing new, but if there’s one hope that Golden State Warrior fans can cling to in this seemingly wasted season, is the potential that Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry have to form a dynamic backcourt like no one has ever seen in the NBA.

We need to see if these two can play together and I think with another offseason and another year of Curry at the point, they can form the best backcourt in the NBA. How mad would you be if they traded one or both of these guys and they became perennial All-Stars?

Because it will happen if/when one of these guys go.

As long as someone comes along in the offseason in the way of a defensive stopper, helper, shot blocker or other defensive term that you can think of, that will hide their inefficiencies.

That one player, rather than a complete overhaul, could lead them to the playoffs and maybe beyond.

I’m also looking forward to this team being able to not only get the rest of this season to figure things out, but an entire summer as well.

Last summer, David Lee was the biggest signing in Warriors history. However, he has been playing like he‘s been the 100th best signing they’ve ever had. It’s easy to make fun of him and his contract because as soon as he signed that deal, he became a target.

I want to keep Lee around to see how he will improve and if he will start earning that money. His performance has not been all his fault. He missed most of last summer due to a broken finger while he was practicing with Team USA.

That’s right: Team USA. After his performance so far this season, it’s hard to believe that they even ask him to practice with them—ugh.

See how easy it is to rip on him!

He came back after that and the Warriors exploded out of the gate. I remember thinking, “Hey, they can make the playoffs.”

That was the same game that he shredded his elbow on Wilson Chandler’s face and he really hasn’t been the same since. Plus, it’s not like Andris Biedrins is helping him out at all.

With a full offseason to play with Curry and Ellis, maybe then can develop their own Big Three, or at least a Medium Three.

This team just needs time to mesh.

Give Ekpe Udoh more time on the floor. I like that Keith Smart was starting Udoh at center. Sure, it's not working, but at least they are trying something else. Play around with the lineup and see what works and what doesn't work.

There will be some change this offseason with all of their expiring deals. This is a very key offseason for Joe Lacob, especially after all the talking he has been doing.

He keeps saying he wants to change. Instead of just changing all the players, change their attitude.

The biggest problem they have outside a defensive presence is veteran leadership. Who exactly is supposed to show these guys how to win? There is not one player on the roster that has really won anything.

Bring in a guy with playoff experience, a veteran who knows how to win in this league—someone Ellis and Curry can look up to.

That’s why they lose so many close games—they just don’t know how to win them.

They need someone who is as passionate as Charlie Sheen is about winning, but someone who actually is a winner.

They have talent here and sure, it hasn’t worked out this year, but I don’t think blowing up the roster is the answer—specially with a cloudy future the NBA is facing, with a potential lockout looming.

The Warriors need a full offseason together and I want to see what they can do with that. I really think there is something to be excited about here and hopefully some help will come.

And if you think blowing up the roster is the answer, ask any Charlotte Bobcats fan—if there are any left—if they are excited about their team for the next couple years.

Doesn’t look that bad here anymore, does it?
