NCAA Tournament 2011: 10 Most Overrated Teams Headed To the Dance
March Madness is almost upon us and the possible 68 slots in the NCAA Tournament are being filled up every day.
As always, the tournament committee will favor some teams more than others, and it will show in the final bracket.
These 10 teams are basically locks to make the Big Dance, but they are majorly overrated.
No. 10: Villanova Wildcats
1 of 10
Current Record: 21-11
Projected Seed: 7
Notable Wins: at Syracuse, vs. Louisville
Notable Losses: at Rutgers, at Providence, vs. South Florida
Villanova is led by Corey Fisher, who has played well in his career, but just isn't that good.
The Wildcats have lost five in a row and had a terrible showing in their opening round loss to USF in the Big East tournament.
No. 9: Xavier Musketeers
2 of 10
Current Record: 24-6
Projected Seed: 5
Notable Wins: vs. Temple
Notable Losses: at Charlotte, at Cincinnati by 20
Xavier is ranked inside the top 20 in college basketball, even with their best win being at home against Temple.
The A-10 isn't that great of a conference this year, but somehow, Xavier is still projected to get a five seed in the tournament.
No. 8: George Mason Patriots
3 of 10
Current Record: 26-6
Projected Seed: 8
Notable Wins: vs. Harvard
Notable Losses: None
This is another team who hasn't lost to anyone big, but hasn't beaten anyone big either.
They've been ranked inside the top 25 in college basketball during the year, even though their best win is at home against Harvard.
Just because they were a Cinderella team a few years ago, doesn't mean they can do it again.
No. 7: Washington Huskies
4 of 10
Current Record: 20-10
Projected Seed: 10
Notable Wins: vs. Arizona
Notable Losses: vs. Kentucky, at Texas A&M, at Oregon State
Washington was projected to be a tough team to beat before the season started, but with poor play and injuries occurring, the Huskies haven't been as good as people thought.
The only notable team they've beaten is Arizona, and have lost every other chance to beat good teams.
No. 6: Missouri Tigers
5 of 10
Current Record: 22-9
Projected Seed: 8
Notable Wins: vs. Kansas State, vs. Vanderbilt
Notable Losses: vs. Georgetown, at Kansas State, at Texas, at Texas A&M, at/vs. Kansas
Missouri hasn't beaten anyone good in two months, but have been in and out of the AP top 25 polls.
They lost their last three games, and finished fifth in the Big 12, but still might be awarded an eight seed.
No. 5: Utah State Aggies
6 of 10
Current Record: 28-3
Projected Seed: 8
Notable Wins: at Saint Mary's
Notable Losses: at Georgetown by 17
Once again, how can a team whose best victory is against Saint Mary's be ranked in the top 25.
The AP is giving too much love to mid-majors nowadays, and Utah State will definitely get over seeded in the NCAA Tournament.
No. 4: Vanderbilt Commodores
7 of 10
Current Record: 21-9
Projected Seed: 6
Notable Wins: vs. Kentucky, vs. North Carolina
Notable Losses: vs. Arkansas
Vanderbilt isn't a horrible team, I'll admit that much.
Still, they've lost three of their last four games, and two to ranked opponents. I don't have confidence that they are good enough to be a six seed when most of their good wins came before January.
No. 3: Arizona Wildcats
8 of 10
Current Record: 25-6
Projected Seed: 5
Notable Wins: None
Notable Losses: vs. Kansas, at BYU by 22
Arizona has been ranked in the top 25 all year, without beating anyone of note.
Literally, their best win is probably at home against UCLA, even though the Bruins crushed them last week in Los Angeles.
No. 2: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
9 of 10
Current Record: 25-5
Projected Seed: 2
Notable Wins: at Pittsburgh, vs. Louisville
Notable Losses: at Syracuse, vs. Kentucky
Notre Dame isn't a bad team, but they certainly are not the fourth best team in the country, which they are ranked currently in the AP.
Ben Hansbrough is their best player, and he is overrated himself. Notre Dame won't make it past the Sweet 16, guaranteed.
No. 1: Brigham Young Cougars
10 of 10
Current Record: 28-3
Projected Seed: 2
Notable Wins: at/vs. San Diego State, vs. Arizona
Notable Losses: at/vs. New Mexico
The only reason BYU is ranked so highly in the polls is because everyone has fallen in love with Jimmer Fredette.
Yes, he is a fantastic player, but he showed he still needs some help to win games. With the loss of Brandon Davies, BYU is no longer an elite team, and won't hold up very long as a second seed in the tournament.
