NCAA Tournament Bracket: 10 Teams with No. 1 Seed Aspirations
Get your brackets ready ladies and gentlemen.
Selection Sunday is less than a week away, and that means that the best three weeks of sports are coming up fast.
This has been a wild college basketball season, and as the major conference tournaments kick off this week, a number of teams will be fighting to secure that No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Will Duke be able to secure the No. 1 seed after losing that ACC finale to UNC?
What about BYU, now that one of their top players has been dismissed from the team?
There is quite a list of potential No. 1 seeds, and those questions about who will receive one, will get answered when the Madness is officially announced on Sunday evening.
Until then, let's break this down and take a look at 10 of college basketball's best teams and why they might or might not receive a top seed in this year's NCAA Tournament.
10. Purdue
1 of 10
Tournament Resume: [25-6, 14-4, RPI: 9, SOS: 26]
Purdue had a real true shot at locking up a No. 1 seed heading into this week's Big Ten Tournament. But an unexpected 67-65 loss to Iowa this past weekend really set the Boilermakers back.
Purdue has a solid record to go along with a good RPI and strength of schedule. But realistically, in order to have any chance to snag a No. 1 seed, they would need to win the Big Ten Tournament and have a few other top rated teams slip up along the way.
Chances are that Purdue will likely get a No. 2 or 3 seed when it is all said and done.
Purdue is a good team, but when you lose your final game of the regular season to Iowa, you really don't stand out all that much to the selection committee.
9. San Diego State
2 of 10
Tournament Resume: [29-2, 14-2, RPI: 3, SOS: 39]
If BYU wasn't around, San Diego State would have been the only undefeated team in college basketball this season. But unfortunately for the Aztecs, that just isn't the case.
Steve Fisher's club sports a great record and they have an excellent RPI. The only problem here is that they didn't play anyone that good.
If San Diego State can win their conference tournament and top BYU in the final game, then they should have a chance at getting a No. 1 seed. It won't be a great chance, because the committee will look hard at that 39th ranked strength of schedule, but a chance non-the-less.
8. Texas
3 of 10
Tournament Resume: [25-6, 13-3, RPI: 14, SOS: 23]
Texas is one of those teams, that just two weeks ago, people were talking about them potentially being the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Oh, what can change in two weeks.
Texas sports a good record and a solid RPI playing in one of the better conferences in college basketball. But recent road loses to Nebraska and Colorado really smothered the Longhorns' chances at receiving a No. 1 seed.
The beauty of college basketball is that can all change within a week.
If the Longhorns win the Big 12 Tournament, and can take out Kansas in the championship round, then Jordan Hamilton and Co. should have a legitimate case for being a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. But at this point, that really is a big "if."
7. North Carolina
4 of 10
Tournament Resume: [24-6, 14-2, RPI: 7, SOS: 11]
When looking at that tournament resume, it looks like it is worthy of a No. 1 seed. Now, factor in the fact that UNC took it to Duke this past weekend on their way to being crowned ACC Champs, and it really looks like North Carolina is making a strong case here.
The key with North Carolina will be how they perform in the ACC Tournament. If they can win the conference tournament and defeat Duke for a second straight time, the Tar Heels will be a strong contender for a No. 1 seed.
If you look at UNC's schedule, they have a lot of quality wins, and their only real questionable loss was to Georgia Tech back in mid-January.
This is a young team, but it looks like they are just getting better and better as the season goes on here. Look out for the Tar Heels in the NCAA Tournament, regardless of if they are able to lock up that top seed or not.
6. BYU
5 of 10
Tournament Resume: [28-3, 14-2, RPI: 4, SOS: 19]
Who knew that heading into the NCAA Tournament, Jimmer Fredette would not be the biggest conversation piece when talking about this BYU team.
The top question that has been a hot topic around college basketball this past week is: Was BYU right to dismiss forward Brandon Davies from the team, and how will the Cougars fare in the tournament without their top inside presence?
The truth is that the selection committee will likely take the dismissal into play when deciding if BYU is worthy of a No. 1 or not. The Cougars certainly have the resume, RPI and strength of schedule to make a case for a top seed.
5. Notre Dame
6 of 10
Tournament Resume: [25-5, 14-4, RPI: 8, SOS: 32]
When talking about your most surprising teams in college basketball this season, Notre Dame might have a spot right on top of that list.
The Irish have been outstanding this year, and are arguably the best shooting team in all of basketball (Ohio State might rival them).
When looking over Notre Dame's resume, they only lost one non-conference game this season, and that was to a very good Kentucky team. All five of their loses have come against tournament teams, and they have defeated a ton of good Big East teams on their way to a 25-5 record.
Really, when you break it down, it's pretty simple here with Notre Dame. If the Irish win the Big East Tournament, they should receive a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. If they don't, well, they won't receive a No. 1 seed.
Told you it was simple.
4. Duke
7 of 10
Tournament Resume: [27-4, 13-3, RPI: 5, SOS: 36]
It's pretty hard to believe that a team that didn't win it's regular season conference title is likely to receive a No. 1 seed. But from where it stands right now, that's the way it looks with Duke.
If Duke wins the ACC conference tournament, they will all but assure themselves that top seed. If not, it should be interesting to see if they get it, UNC gets it, or if no ACC team is rewarded a top seed.
Either way, Duke is the defending National Champions and despite a few bumps and bruises, they have had a great season this year. They have the resume of a No. 1 seed, and chances are that's where they will be come Selection Sunday.
3. Pittsburgh
8 of 10
Tournament Resume: [25-4, 15-3, RPI: 6, SOS: 34]
As it stands right now, the Pitt Panthers are the kings of the Big East. But with the conference tournament starting up this week, that could change in the nick of time.
Pitt has put together a memorable year thus far, racking up 25 wins and winning the Big East regular season title. Now, the test will be to see if Jamie Dixon's team can finish it out with a conference championship and a No. 1 seed heading into the tournament.
Most college basketball experts have Pitt as a No. 1 seed heading into the tournament. Hard to argue with that.
2. Kansas
9 of 10
Tournament Resume: [29-2, 14-2, RPI: 1, SOS: 13]
You gotta believe that there are at least two teams right now that could lose at any point in their conference tournament and still receive a No. 1 seed come Selection Sunday. The Kansas Jayhawks are certainly one of those teams.
Coming into the year, people figured Kansas to be a good team, but not many expected them to be as dominant as they have been.
Kansas cruised through their non-conference schedule and have been dominant for the most part in Big 12 play as well. The Morris twins are arguably the best one-two frontcourt combination in all of college basketball.
At least for now, it looks like Kansas is playing some of the best basketball in the country and I would not want to run into this team come NCAA Tournament time.
1. Ohio State
10 of 10
Tournament Resume: [29-2, 16-2, RPI: 2, SOS: 28]
There really isn't much of an argument here as to who is the best team in college basketball this season.
Ohio State has been dominant throughout the year, and the scary thing is that they seem to be playing their best basketball right now, heading into the NCAA Tournament.
The Buckeyes are one of those teams that seem to have everything you need in order to win a National Championship. Great shooting, a dominant big man, solid defense, senior leadership, you name it and Thad Matta's team has it.
The Buckeyes look to be in a position where they are a lock for a No. 1 seed regardless of how they do in the Big Ten tournament. But if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on them winning that as well.
