Three's Company: Jon Diebler, Ohio State Dominate Wisconsin, 93-65

Tyler WaddellMar 6, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Wisconsin defeated Ohio State in their previous matchup in Madison, 71-67, destroying the Buckeyes' dreams of an undefeated season.

Revenge was in store, to say the least.

The Buckeyes took it to the 10th-ranked Badgers Sunday night, 93-65, and secured the Big Ten regular season title.

Jon Diebler, also known as "3-bler", scored 27 points, including making seven of eight 3-point attempts. Jared Sullinger contributed with 22 points and eight rebounds, and William Buford scored 18 as Ohio State (29-2, 16-2 Big Ten) set a new NCAA Division I record by hitting 14 straight 3-pointers. The Buckeyes missed one shot from behind the arc the entire night.

"On our best day this year, we hit 11 of 17 and thought we'd hit the jackpot," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said. "14 of 15? I don't think people do that very often. Either that, or I'm living in the wrong part of the country."

Not only did Ohio State shoot 93.3 percent from 3-land -- they also nailed 68-percent from the field overall. Combine this with a stellar defensive outing, and you have yourself a deadly concoction; a blowout.

"I don't know if you could script it much better," said Ohio State coach Thad Matta. "Our defensive energy was incredible ... and offensively the shots were falling. It was incredible how well we shot the basketball."

The 18,809 fans that piled into Value City Arena had something special in store for coach Ryan: 1,400 scarlet towels were dispersed among the crowd that read, "Deal With It", patronizing his statements made after handing the Buckeyes' first loss of the season last month. The Ohio State student section, located behind Wisconsin's bench, immediately became hecklers towards the Badger head coach for the remainder of the evening.

The Buckeyes got off to a hot start and never looked back, putting together a 47-32 halftime lead.

Diebler is 17 of 20 on 3-pointers in his last two games for Ohio State, and tied the Big Ten record with 10 3's against Penn State Tuesday.

Another large part of the Buckeyes' brow-raising victory was freshman Aaron Craft's defensive performance; the speedy point guard held Jordan Taylor to just eight points, shooting two of nine from the field.

Taylor was coming off a career-best 39-point game at Indiana.

Wisconsin cut the Buckeye lead to as close as 11 in the second half, but that's all they had left in the tank.

Ohio State will be the top seed in the Big Ten tournament next week, and will most likely earn a one seed in the NCAA tournament.

"Our first mission was a regular-season Big Ten championship. That's complete," said senior guard David Lighty. "Now we'll turn our focus on a three-day tournament that we need to win and that will get us ready for the NCAA tournament. That's just step two of our three-step mission."
