NCAA March Madness: Who Will Win the Race for the Top Seeds on Selection Sunday?

Jeff HansenFeb 28, 2011

If there is one thing that college basketball fans all across the country can agree on, it's that there really isn't one team that is the best team in the country.

There are a handful of really, really good teams, but not one that really jumps out as the best team in basketball.

It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the Big East, the Big 10 or a Mountain West Conference fan, nobody stands out.

Selection Sunday is just a few weeks away and there are is still much debate of what team deserves to receive a number one seed. But which teams deserve it the most?

Ohio State Buckeyes (27-2):

This one seems pretty obvious to me.

Ohio State spent the majority of the season on as the No. 1 team in the country and they should be a lock to be one of the four top seeds.

Their out-of-conference schedule isn't the most impressive, but it does include a big win at Florida. Getting into conference play, they have big wins over Minnesota (twice), Illinois and Purdue.

Their only two losses came at Purdue and at Wisconsin, two teams that have been in and out of the top 10 all year.

Like I said, this seems like a lock, but if there is any doubt about the Buckeyes, a win this week over Wisconsin and a decent showing in the Big 10 tournament should convince the selection committee.

Kansas Jayhawks (27-2):

Kansas seems to be another lock for a No. 1 seed.

Early in the season the Jayhawks had many close calls, including a one-point win over UCLA and a two-point win over USC on their home floor.

As of late however, the Jayhawks are playing very good basketball.

Quality wins over Arizona, UCLA, and Missouri should be enough to trump their losses to Texas and Kansas State.

Kansas has a chance to make a statement this week as they take on Texas A&M and Missouri again. If the Jayhawks can win both games and play well in the Big 12 tournament, that should be enough to solidify their top seed.

This is where the fun begins. The remaining two No. 1 seeds are up in the air.

BYU Cougars (27-2):

Jimmer Fredette has led the Cougars into uncharted territory. After another big win over San Diego State, the Cougars vaulted to a No. 3 ranking in both major polls.

But are they proven enough deserve a No. 1 seed? It's debatable.

Out of conference they had quality wins over Utah State, a disappointing St. Mary's team and Arizona. They missed a chance to silence a few of the doubters when they fell to UCLA.

In conference they are playing very well including two giant wins over a very good San Diego State team and the Cougars tout the 12th strongest schedule in the country.

However, that schedule is filled with very good teams—not many great teams.

While I think the Cougars are very deserving, it's very easy to argue against them. They simply aren't as proven as teams in the power conferences.

BYU will need to win out in order to even be in the conversation for a number one seed.

Pittsburgh Panthers (25-4):

At first glance, a four-loss Pitt team doesn't look as qualified at the teams that I've previously mentioned; but when you throw in the fact that they play in the Big East, four losses doesn't seem to bad.

Out of conference, they had a very big win over Texas early in the season, they also suffered a loss to Tennessee before the conference season. But getting into Big East play, the Panthers look very, very impressive.

Pitt has wins over Syracuse, UConn, Georgetown and Villanova and losses to Notre Dame, St. Johns and most recently to Louisville.

I think Pitt is a No. 1 seed, but if they want to make sure there is no doubt, they will need to beat Villanova this week and play decent in the Big East Tourney.

Pitt will be a very dangerous team as either a one seed or a two seed.

Duke Blue Devils (26-3):

Duke has had a very good season. However, their schedule doesn't jump out as a great schedule by any means.

Much like BYU—and to no fault of their own—they don't have any really big wins.

Early in the season they beat both Kansas State and Michigan State, but both of those teams proved to be very disappointing throughout the season and don't mean much as far as Duke's tournament resume is concerned.

Duke also beat a solid Temple team out of conference. However they lost to a very surprising St. Johns team; that could have been the game that would have sealed their No. 1 seed.

Getting into ACC play, their best win is over North Carolina.

While the Tar Heels are good, they aren't the caliber of team we are accustomed to seeing. Duke has losses to Florida State and Virgina Tech as well.

The Blue Devils aren't overly impressive on paper, but don't let that fool you, they are a very good team.

Duke is one of the best teams in the country, but they will need to win out in order to earn a number one seed in the tournament.

Texas, Purdue, Notre Dame:

Each of these three teams could make a case for a No. 1 seed—Texas almost had it locked up before blowing a 22-point lead to Colorado in a loss.

Barring any significant upsets the rest of the way, I don't see any of these teams hitting the top line. However, they are worth mentioning as they have all proven to be very good teams that could make a deep run in the tournament.

What teams do you think have the best shot at earning a No. 1 seed?

Leave a comment and state your case why.
