Jimmer Fredette and BYU Make a Statement in Win at SDSU

Mick AkersFeb 26, 2011

The seventh ranked BYU Cougars won a tough battle 80-67 against the sixth ranked San Diego State Aztecs Saturday afternoon.

Coming into this game, talk spread of a possible number one seed in next month's NCAA Tournament to whoever came out with a win in this game.

BYU seemed to want it more. SDSU is known for their tough psychical play, but BYU was actually the one playing with grit and intensity. BYU competed effectively with SDSU's front court duo of Malcom Thomas and Kawhi Leonard.

Although he shot only 8 of 23, BYU's Jimmer Fredette still managed to score 25 points. However, this game belonged to BYU's supporting cast.

Hitting 14-24 three-point goals, BYU seemed to hit a three pointer everytime the Aztecs attempted a run.

Not typically known for his three-point abilities, Charles Abouo hit four out of five threes on his way to 18 points and nine rebounds. The bulk of his threes were momentum stoppers, made when SDSU was trying to mount a comeback.

Noah Hartstock added 15 points, and Jackson Emery contributed 13 to help guide BYU to the win.

With the big game finally in the books, attention now shifts away from SDSU to BYU and its possible number one seeding in the big dance.

Putting on a a show for a national audience in this highly anticipated game should help the Cougars in the long run. After not getting any chances to play on the national scene all year, BYU made the most of it's opportunity today.

It will all come down to BYU at least making it to the Mountain West Conference finals before snatching a number one seeding out of the hands of a top-six conference hopeful.
